One with the community! Big hearts. Big impact. A little friendly competition!

This past Tuesday, our department received the 2026 WHAS Crusade for Children Jim Walton Award from WHAS11 TV, and our AMFEMS community helped make it possible!

The WHAS Crusade for Children shared:

“Each year the WHAS Crusade for Children recognizes four fire departments that have the largest percentage increase in donations in their respective categories.
For fire departments collecting $100,000 and above, Anchorage Middletown achieved an outstanding 50.42% increase over last year, bringing their 2026 total to $194,430.27!

Backed by an incredibly generous community, their year-round commitment makes a life-changing difference for children with health care, educational, and emotional wellness needs across Kentucky and Southern Indiana.”

“A huge thank you to Chief Pat Walsh and the entire Anchorage Middletown Fire Department and community for their dedication, heart, and competitive spirit! We can't wait to see what 2027 brings!”

Taking the top spot from our friends at PRP Fire? That made the celebration a little sweeter!

Our fundraising goes beyond traditional collections. Just this past Saturday, we beat PRP again to take home the championship trophy at the 2026 Crusade for Children Softball Tournament, raising another $1,350.00 for the Crusade!

Sorry, PRP, we're enjoying those bragging rights! Whether we're collecting donations or rounding the bases, the real winners are the children we all come together to support.

By the numbers:

• 2025 total: $129,258.00
• 2026 total raised: $194,430.27 + $1,350.00 (2026 Crusade for Children Softball Tournament)
• 50.42% increase
• Over 200% increase since AMFEMS was formed in 2018

To ALL our team members: we are incredibly proud of your unrelenting efforts for such a great cause. THANK YOU!

To every member of the AMFEMS community: THANK YOU for your generosity. None of this would be possible without you!

Together, we're making a difference for children, and we're already excited to see what we can accomplish in 2027!

Training to better serve our community!

This week, 15 of our members completed a 50-hour Trench Rescue Technician course at LG&E’s indoor training facility.

Participants learned updated trench shoring principles and shored a few variations of straight trenches, an L-shaped, a T-shaped trench and a deep trench. Paratech struts, walers, airbags, and buttress systems were used to manage voids and safely shore each trench prior to rescuer entry.

The course included using a bipod to lift heavy objects and applying multiple techniques to safely remove a victim from a trench.

Although trench rescues occur infrequently, they demand specialized skills and a high level of readiness. These 15 new Trench Rescue Technicians will join our 20 Trench Rescue Specialists and Special Operations Team; expanding our depth of trained personnel and strengthening our response capabilities.

Training for these low-occurrence, high-risk incidents reflects our commitment to our community and helps ensure that our members are better prepared to serve the public.

We sincerely appreciate our community partner, LG&E, for providing access to their indoor training facility and making this valuable training possible, rain or shine.

The class was taught by our very own trench rescue instructors.

Fire Prevention/Home Safety Week is ending! But you can practice home safety year-round!

This year’s theme: "Charge Into Fire Safety." “Safe Charging is a Superpower.”

Our Community Risk Reduction team is hard at work and brings you this message on behalf of the National Fire Safety Association (NFPA):

On a Flight? Keep It in Sight.

When charging on a plane, keep portable charging devices on the tray table. Do not charge devices in overhead compartments and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery overheats or fails, it is important for the flight crew to be able to respond quickly.

Fully Charged? Time to Unplug.

Unplug your device when it is fully charged. Leaving it plugged in longer than needed can increase heat and stress on the battery.

This year's theme: "Charge Into Fire Safety." “Safe Charging is a Superpower.”

Our Community Risk Reduction team is hard at work and brings you this message on behalf of the National Fire Safety Association (NFPA):

For Tools and Rides, Charge Outside.

Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail.

It’s Fire Prevention Week/Home Safety Week!

This year's theme: "Charge Into Fire Safety." “Safe Charging is a Superpower.”

Our Community Risk Reduction team is hard at work and brings you this message on behalf of the National Fire Safety Association (NFPA):

Feels Hot? Stop Using It.

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.
