This weekend marks two years since Hurricane Helene made landfall along Florida’s Big Bend coast before moving into South Georgia and through Lowndes County. Its impact was felt throughout our community and across the region, leaving a lasting reminder of South Georgia's strength and resilience.
The anniversary is an opportunity to pause and reflect on our community's strength, our people's resilience, and the countless acts of service and kindness that followed the storm. Hurricane Helene presented one of the greatest challenges our community has faced, testing our families, businesses, and public safety agencies. But in the days, weeks, and months that followed, it also showed the true heart of our community!
Neighbors helped neighbors. First responders worked around the clock. Utility crews, public works teams, and volunteers stepped forward to help clear roads, restore services, and support those in need. Families, businesses and community organizations all played a role in the response and recovery.
As we look back two years later, we honor everyone affected by Hurricane Helene and extend our deepest gratitude to the first responders, utility crews, public works teams, volunteers, and community members who gave their time, resources, and support to help our community recover.
Hurricane Helene also reminded us of an important lesson: preparedness matters. Having a plan, staying informed, knowing multiple ways to receive emergency information, and being prepared to care for your family for several days can make a difference when severe weather strikes.
Two years later, we remember the challenges we faced, recognize how far our community has come, and carry forward the lessons Hurricane Helene taught us. We are stronger because our community came together when it mattered most. ♥
