A special thank-you to the South Plains Food Bank for distributing the wheat and to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who lovingly donated it from Salt Lake City, Utah. Your generosity helps us bring food, education, and new culinary experiences to our community! ❤️

🌧️🌱 When it rains, the garden grows! 🌱💚

West Texas has been getting some much-needed rain, and our garden is soaking it all in! Every drop nourishes the soil, feeds the roots, and reminds us that growth takes time, patience, and a little help from Mother Nature. 🌿💧

At Roots Booker T. Washington Community Garden, we’re growing more than fruits, vegetables, and flowers. We’re growing community, cultivating connections, and creating a place where everybody can flourish. 🌻🤝🏾

Sometimes the best thing we can do is slow down, let it rain, and trust the process. 🌧️🌱

Healthy soil. Strong roots. Thriving community. 💚

There’s something special about a Saturday morning spent in the garden. 🌱
Today, 11 amazing volunteers came together to w**d, water, harvest, and care for a space that belongs to the whole community. Every seed planted, every bed cleaned, and every conversation shared helps cultivate something bigger than vegetables.
The Roots at Booker T. Washington Community Garden is proof that community doesn’t just happen—it grows through people who show up for one another.
To everyone who gave their time today: thank you. Your hands helped grow fresh food, but your presence helped grow hope, connection, and a stronger neighborhood.
Here’s to many more Saturdays of getting our hands dirty and our hearts full. 💚🌻

These black skin peanut plants look healthy, and they’re a great crop for a West Texas community garden. Peanuts are legumes, so they help improve soil fertility by working with bacteria that capture nitrogen from the air and make it available in the soil. They also tolerate heat and drought better than many garden crops once established. The one thing they don’t like is “wet feet”—waterlogged soil can lead to rot and poor pod development.
