NATIONAL FIREFIGHTER SHORTAGE HITS HOME IN IDALOU

The national challenge of keeping volunteer fire departments staffed has a local face in Idalou, where Chief Russ Perkins says 23 volunteers make up the department’s entire roster.

Many volunteers work in Lubbock. Availability depends on who can leave work and reach a call; the full roster is not necessarily available for an emergency.

Nearly 70% of firefighters nationally are volunteers. Perkins said the demands extend beyond emergency responses to maintaining trucks, preparing equipment and keeping supplies ready.

Departments across Lubbock County share personnel and equipment through mutual aid. Perkins said structure fires can automatically bring responses from 2 or 3 departments.

Help is also needed outside firefighting, including mechanical work, food and supplies. Anyone interested in joining can contact the fire chief at (806) 892 2531.

Emergency service coverage is supported by Ace Bail Bonds, (806) 747 0257. Keep community reporting going: like, comment and share The806er.

🇺🇸 NEVER FORGET 🇺🇸

09/10/2026

Saturday September 5th three Woodrow Firefighters Brandon Maloy , Eric Best and Wesley Boone climbed in the Dallas Memorial Stair Climb. 110 floors in one of the tallest buildings in Dallas. This was not a competition or race it was a Memorial for 343 of our Brothers that were killed on 9/11. They were running in while people were running out. Little did they know this would be their last!
