A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO THE GULF COAST BROTHERHOOD RIDE 🇺🇸

Sheriff Mitchell Mixon and the George County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Gulf Coast Brotherhood Ride for organizing a memorial ride in honor of EMT Katie Pipkins and Deputy Jeremy Malone.

We were humbled by the tremendous turnout as riders traveled through George County to pay tribute to these fallen heroes. The Brotherhood Ride also presented memorial plaques to their families, providing a meaningful reminder that their service, sacrifice, and memories will never be forgotten.

As the riders continue their journey to visit other law enforcement agencies and honor additional fallen heroes, we are reminded of the powerful bond shared among first responders and the communities they serve. Their dedication to remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice is truly commendable.

To everyone participating in this ride, thank you for honoring our heroes and keeping their legacies alive. As you continue your journey, please stay safe on the roads. May God watch over each of you and bring you safely to every destination.

🇺🇸 NEVER FORGOTTEN. FOREVER HONORED. 🇺🇸

PRESS RELEASE
George County Fatal Shooting Under Investigation

On October 9, 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the George County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) received a call to respond to 135 Southern Oak Drive in the Howell community regarding a domestic disturbance.

Upon arrival, deputies learned that the homeowner, Mr. Joshua Greenhill, and a female friend had been involved in a disturbance. The female was permitted to leave the residence with a family member. Alcohol was believed to have been a contributing factor in the incident.

Shortly after midnight, the GCSO received another call regarding an incident on Southern Oaks Drive. The reporting party (RP), male stated he had shot a man.

Deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to the intersection of Southern Oaks Drive and Highway 612, where they located the RP, another male and discovered Mr. Greenhill lying on the road suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

Investigators were called to the scene and determined that the female who had previously left the Greenhill residence had contacted two male friends for transportation back to the residence to retrieve her vehicle. The female was dropped off at the intersection of Highway 612 and Southern Oaks Drive, where the two men remained in their vehicle while waiting for her.

During this time, Mr. Greenhill left his residence on foot and approached the vehicle occupied by the RP. Investigators learned that while wearing brass knuckles Mr. Greenhill struck the RP multiple times in the face. The RP then fired two shots, striking Mr. Greenhill.

Mr. Greenhill was pronounced deceased at the scene. George County Coroner Deeann Murrah responded. A pair of brass knuckles was recovered from Mr. Greenhill’s person as evidence.

The RP who sustained facial injuries was transported by ambulance to George Regional Hospital under police es**rt for treatment. He was later released.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the shooting appears to have been an act of self-defense. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as appropriate.

Sheriff Mitchell Mixon stated;
“This is a tragic incident which will terribly affect the family, loved ones and friends of Mr. Greenhill, each will certainly be in our thoughts and prayers.”

The George County Sheriff’s Office gratefully appreciates the assistance of emergency personnel and all who responded to this incident.

💜 October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month 💜

This month, we proudly wear purple, the recognized ribbon color for domestic violence awareness, to stand together in support of victims and survivors and to help bring awareness to the importance of recognizing and preventing domestic violence.

We were honored to welcome Sara Huot and Jessica James Henry, Ambassadors with the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence, to the George County Sheriff’s Office. They stopped by to place purple ribbons on our deputies’ patrol units and even brought some purple treats for our staff! 💜

We are also proud that our Chief Deputy Dominique Tanner serves on the Board of Directors for the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence, strengthening the partnership between our agency and those working every day to provide support, education, advocacy, and resources to individuals and families affected by domestic violence.

Sheriff Mitchell Mixon said:
“Domestic violence is not a private matter—it is a serious issue that affects individuals, families, and our entire community. We want victims and survivors to know that they are not alone and that help is available. Our deputies are committed to responding to these calls with compassion, professionalism, and the determination to help protect those who are vulnerable. We are proud to partner with organizations like the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence to raise awareness and support those affected by domestic violence.”
