LUDLOW, MA โ Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi is warning residents about another round of sophisticated scams involving criminals impersonating Hampden County Sheriff's Deputies, this time using elaborate, fraudulent federal court documents to frighten victims into handing over thousands of dollars.
The Hampden County Sheriff's Office has obtained copies of forged documents being mailed to would-be victims by scammers, including purported federal arrest warrants, confidentiality and nondisclosure orders, and instructions requiring individuals to remain in contact with supposed law enforcement officers.
The documents prominently display government seals, reference the FBI and U.S. Department of Justice, and cite federal laws in an attempt to appear legitimate.

In one particularly alarming example, the scammers present victims with paperwork demanding two separate $40,000 bond amounts, along with $3,500 in supposed government fees. The documents direct payments through electronic banking applications, including Zelle and Apple Pay, or a purported bonding transaction center.
Even more disturbing, the
instructing victims not to discuss their supposed legal troubles with others. Another fraudulent document demands that victims maintain contact with a supervising deputy and provide information about their movements.
These tactics are designed to isolate victims, create panic, and prevent them from discovering the truth before surrendering their money.
"These scammers are getting more creative, more aggressive, and more convincing, but their goal hasn't changed. They want to scare hardworking people into handing over their money," Sheriff Cocchi said. "Let me be crystal clear: Our deputies are not calling people demanding bond payments, threatening arrest over the phone, or ordering people to keep conversations secret. If someone contacts you claiming to be from our office and demands money, hang up. It's a scam."
The Sheriff's Office reminds residents that scammers can manipulate caller ID information to make calls appear to originate from legitimate law enforcement agencies. They may also use the actual names of deputies, official-looking documents, and threatening language to make their stories more believable.

"One of the most important things people can do is talk about this," Sheriff Cocchi added. "These scammers are counting on fear and embarrassment to keep their victims quiet. There's no shame in being targeted, and there's no reason to face it alone. Before you send a single dollar, make a phone call to someone you trust. That conversation could save you thousands."

Remember: A badge, a name, a phone number, or a document bearing a government seal does not make a scammer legitimate.
When in doubt, hang up. Verify. Report.
