Last week we all got a scare when some uneven ground met with a bit of inexperience on the tractor. Luckily no one was hurt and the machine was just fine as well.
We’ve only had heavy machinery on the land a handful of times, maybe three or four. I am always stunned by what it is capable of doing in such a short amount of time. Where nature can take over a decade to develop an intricate web of plant, animal, and fungal relationships a guy on a tractor can decimate in less than ten minutes.
The power of human beings to have incredible impacts on the living communities we rely on to exist is truly unmatched in this web of life. When I feel disempowered, stuck, or out of control, it is humbling to remember how vulnerable all of the living world around me is to my passing whims—of picking a flower, dumping trash, smashing a bug. Truly each and every human has so much power to impact the world around us, no matter how shut down, immobilized, or oppressed we may be.
But as spider man says, with this power comes great responsibility. What is our responsibility as human beings to the web of life that sustains us? Mainstream culture has taught us that we have none, it is our right and role to exploit, destroy, and pillage—anything to increase our sense of comfort and material well-being.
Trying to reject those roles and live as a human engaged with the work of shepherding, stewarding, and safeguarding the living world around me is not very glamorous or financially rewarding. At times I’m not sure what’s harder—the work itself or the work of reorienting myself to a different moral compass than almost everyone I encounter in mainstream society.
There’s no neat bow or ending point here. Just the everyday thoughts and then simple gratitudes of a life lived close to the earth. Thank god no one was hurt. Thank god we didn’t have to foot the bill of a broken rented tractor. Thank god our road is smoother making it easier for folks to come and go. Thank god we have these machines that make our lives easier. Thank god we have found a path that makes it easier for us to live lighter, without the daily need for a machine that makes our already enormous impacts even greater.
