As we close out Fire Prevention Week, this year’s national theme is “Safe charging is a superpower.” It’s a timely reminder: On Friday someone turned in a cellphone at the Lyman transfer station with a swollen battery, a sign that the battery was failing.
If you find a swollen battery, do not puncture or squeeze it. Piercing a swollen battery releases toxic gases and exposes reactive lithium to oxygen, which can cause an immediate fire or explosion. Had this battery gone through the compactor, it could have started a fire at the transfer station. Yes, even small batteries can cause a fire.

Thanks to a grant York County EMA received a few years ago, all fire departments in York County have access to a material that can safely store these types of batteries and prevent fires from occurring.

These follow the standard fire-safety guidance for lithium-ion batteries (phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, vapes):
- Use the right charger. Stick with the cord and charger that came with the device, or a replacement from the manufacturer.
- Buy listed products. Look for a mark from a recognized testing lab, such as UL, ETL, or CSA, on devices, batteries, and chargers.
- Charge on a hard, flat surface. Never charge on a bed or couch or under a pillow, where heat can build up.
- Recycle, don’t trash. Never put lithium-ion batteries in household trash or recycling bins. Take them to a battery collection site.

🚨 CARBON MONOXIDE ALERT 🚨

At 11:16 Sunday night, crews were sent to an "odor" call. When they arrived, they found heavy white smoke coming from the chimney. A neighbor had called because a strange smell was drifting into their home.

Inside the house, crews measured carbon monoxide at around 300 parts per million, a dangerous level. The home had no working CO detectors. At that hour, the family would have had life threatening symptoms by morning.

Thanks to quick action by the neighbor who called and the crews who responded, no one had any symptoms. That's what a great community looks like.

Please take a moment to:
✅ Make sure you have working smoke detectors AND carbon monoxide detectors
✅ Test them monthly
✅ Have your furnace, stove, and other heating equipment serviced before you use them this season.

Tonight 14 members attended training at the York County Regional Training Center. This week, our crews conducted ventilation training. Cutting holes in a roof allows for toxic fire gases and heat to escape. Proper ventilation creates liveable space for occupants, better visibility for firefighters, and prevents smoke from becoming flammable. It was great to have a safe place to practice this important skill. Thanks York County!

Not that long ago we thought we would skip training in August because of the heat… people are busy… no one will show up… well tonight proved if you build it they will come. Our department spent the night training on how to search and remove victims from a fire. We had 18 members with a range of experience from one month on the department to 31 years. The York County Training Center did not disappoint!
