There are people who can come in for a short time and make a greater impact than those who have been there for decades.

Robbie Dooley arrived in the Lynchburg City Schools Career and Technical Education program in 2023 with enormous energy. After a successful tenure in a similar role at Franklin County High School, he came to Lynchburg with ideas he was eager to implement. Within two months, he launched a new series of career expos for students at Heritage and E.C. Glass that might have taken others more than a year to get off the ground. He just wasn’t willing to wait if there was a way to help students connect with careers.

Another initiative he quickly brought to life was the “Lunchburg Express,” a food truck that gives culinary students a fun way to practice their skills and gain real world experience. It was a unique opportunity and Robbie worked hard to make it happen.

Sadly, Robbie did not get to see the food truck fully rolled out. He passed away earlier this year after a short and unexpected illness. He is deeply missed by his education and workforce development colleagues across the region.

The Lunchburg Express food truck project is moving forward with a nod to the man who made it happen. Today, Lynchburg City Schools dedicated the truck in Robbie’s memory with his family present. It will carry his name for years to come, while serving as the dynamic training ground Robbie intended it to be.

We salute Robbie for his visionary work to support career development for all of the students he worked with.

One of our favorite things about the annual Worlds of Opportunity Career Expo is how our local employers step up to create engaging activities that help young people learn about jobs in their field.

From healthcare and finance, to carpentry, electrical engineering, and so much more, the Lynchburg region's employers showed off their creativity to get middle school students excited about the future of work.

We applaud the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance for organizing this event in collaboration with Central Virginia Community College. Over the past two days, more than 2,000 students from across our area have been exposed to a wide variety of career options close to home.

Virginia Career Works Central Region was pleased to be among the dozens of organizations and businesses supporting this worthwhile initiative.

The campus of Central Virginia Community College was BUSY today with hundreds of middle school students taking part in the 2026 Worlds of Opportunity.

This annual event, organized by our great partners at the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance, exposes 7th and 8th graders to careers they can have one day in the Lynchburg area. Employers put on interactive demonstrations to show off occupations ranging from welding to respiratory therapy.

We enjoyed seeing students from Amherst, Appomattox, and Campbell County public schools, along with a few homeschool students and a group from Timberlake Christian Academy, light up as they learned about the wide range of potential jobs they could do close to home in the future. Bedford County and Lynchburg City students will join us tomorrow.

Thanks to our friends at the Business Alliance, CVCC, Lynchburg Beacon of Hope, and many others who work hard to make this happen every year! Virginia Career Works is proud to support this important initiative.
