PATROL LIGHTING

Residents may notice the Lyons Police Departmentโ€™s new patrol vehicle operating with dim, steady-burning red and blue lights while conducting routine patrols.

The vehicle is equipped with a Patrol Light mode, which allows portions of the emergency lighting system to remain steadily illuminated at a reduced intensity. This mode is used to increase the visibility and identification of the patrol vehicle, particularly during nighttime patrol.

The activation of these steady-burning Patrol Lights does not indicate a traffic stop or emergency response. Motorists do not need to pull over or yield solely because these lights are illuminated.

When the Town Marshal is initiating a traffic stop or otherwise operating with emergency equipment activated, the vehicle will display its normal bright, flashing emergency light patterns. The difference between the two modes should be readily apparent.

The department may utilize Patrol Light mode during routine patrol as an additional means of maintaining a visible law enforcement presence within the Town of Lyons.

09/25/2026

Residents may have noticed a reduced Town Marshal presence around Lyons over the past two weeks. This was due to the departmentโ€™s previous patrol vehicle, the 2011 Chevy Impala, reaching the end of its serviceable life and becoming unavailable for regular patrol duties.

The Lyons Police Department has now acquired a replacement patrol vehicle: a 2024 Ford F-150 XLT with approximately 46,000 miles. The truck was purchased from the Worthington Police Department and came already equipped for law enforcement use, allowing the Town to obtain a modern, patrol-ready vehicle without the additional expense of purchasing and outfitting a new vehicle from scratch.

With a reliable patrol vehicle available again, residents should expect to see the Town Marshal back to business as usual.

The Chevy Impala served the Town since 2014 and was returned to service when the Lyons Police Department resumed operations in January of this year. However, its age and mechanical condition eventually made continued use impractical.

The new F-150 will provide the department with a reliable platform for regular patrol operations and allow the Town Marshal to resume a consistent law enforcement presence throughout the community.

ARMED AND DANGEROUS | This is Levi Camplin, a person of interest in a homicide happening late Saturday, Aug. 29 in Morgan County.

The radar reading pictured below was recently recorded on E. Broad Street โ€” a posted 25 MPH zone.

63 MPH.

That is 38 MPH over the speed limit and more than 2ยฝ times the posted limit. At 63 MPH, a vehicle is traveling approximately 92 feet every second.

E. Broad Street is not a highway. It is a residential street with homes, driveways, intersections, pedestrians, children, pets, and vehicles regularly entering and leaving the roadway.

Someone backing out of a driveway or crossing the street reasonably expects approaching traffic to be traveling somewhere near 25 MPH. A vehicle approaching at 63 MPH closes that distance dramatically faster than someone may anticipate.

This is exactly why the Lyons Police Department continues to conduct traffic enforcement on E. Broad Street. The goal isn't to write as many tickets as possible. The goal is to prevent the kind of crash where afterward everyone wishes someone had slowed down.

We understand that a few miles per hour over the limit happens. 63 MPH in a 25 MPH zone is something entirely different.

Please slow down on E. Broad Street. The few seconds you might save aren't worth someone's life.
