๐จKNOW THE SIGNS. KNOW WHAT TO DO. SAVE A LIFE.
An overdose can happen quickly. Would you know what to do if you found someone who could not be awakened or was not breathing normally?
The Lyons Police Department is sharing this Overdose First Aid information from Addicted.org to help our community recognize the warning signs of a possible overdose and understand what to do in those critical first few minutes.
โ ๏ธ Signs of a Possible Overdose
Someone experiencing an overdose may:
โข Be unable to wake up or respond
โข Have slow, shallow, or stopped breathing
โข Make gurgling, choking, or unusual snoring sounds
โข Have blue or purple lips or fingernails
โข Have very small, pinpoint pupils that do not respond to light
๐ If You Suspect an Overdose
1๏ธโฃ CALL 911
Give your exact location and follow the dispatcher's instructions.
2๏ธโฃ GIVE NALOXONE (NARCAN), IF AVAILABLE
If you have naloxone available, administer it according to the product instructions. If there is no response, another dose may be necessary after 2โ3 minutes.
3๏ธโฃ CHECK THEIR BREATHING
If the person is not breathing normally, follow the emergency dispatcher's instructions and provide rescue breathing or CPR if you are able.
If the person is breathing but unconscious, place them in the recovery position and continue monitoring them.
4๏ธโฃ DON'T LEAVE JUST BECAUSE THEY WAKE UP
Naloxone is temporary, and overdose symptoms can return after someone appears to be okay. Medical attention is still needed.
If they're breathing but unconscious, place them on their side. Continue monitoring them until EMS arrives.
โค๏ธ WHEN IN DOUBT, TREAT IT AS AN OVERDOSE AND CALL 911.
Knowing what to do during the first few minutes of an overdose could save someone's life.
The Lyons Police Department encourages everyone to save this post, share it with your family and friends, and take a few minutes to learn these steps.
