Macomb Fire Department Installing No-Cost Smoke Alarms in Conjunction with Statewide Campaign
October 18-24 Macomb, IL – In a collaborative effort with the nonprofit Camp I Am Me and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM), the Macomb Fire Department will be installing no-cost smoke alarms for residents of Macomb as part of the Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation Program. This initiative provides smoke alarms and fire safety materials to Illinois fire departments to both educate the public and equip homes with life-saving devices.
The Statewide Smoke Alarm Installation Blitz campaign, scheduled for October 18–24, unites fire departments across Illinois to promote fire prevention and ensure homes are equipped with properly functioning smoke alarms. As part of Fire Prevention Month, the Macomb Fire Department will be installing 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms to improve home safety and protect families in the community.
Along with smoke alarm installation, the program also educates families on how to develop and practice home fire escape plans, giving residents the knowledge they need to act quickly and safely in the event of a fire.
“Our primary goal is to ensure all residents have the lifesaving protection of a smoke alarm,” explains Chief Meyer. “While alarms are critical, they are just one part of the equation. Knowing how to respond in an emergency is just as important.”
Residents interested in receiving a smoke alarm or learning more about the Macomb Fire Department’s installation program are encouraged to contact the department at 309-836-7800 or visit https://cityofmacomb.com/fire-prevention-programs/

Charge into Fire Safety! ⚡

This Fire Prevention Week, we’re focusing on safe charging habits and lithium-ion battery safety.

Use the right charger, charge on a hard surface, unplug when fully charged, and never use a battery that is hot, swollen, damaged, or making unusual sounds.

Small choices can help prevent a fire. Safe charging is a superpower!

During Patriot Day the Macomb Fire Department participated in several events to honor and remember the lives lost on 9/11/2001. At these events children and adults learned about the Freedom Flag and the symbolism behind the design. Steel of the World Trade Center was also on display for viewers to connect themselves to that day. The Freedom Flag and the WTC steel has made it to Western Illinois University, City Hall, and Chandler Park. It is currently on display for public viewing at the fire station.

Macomb Fire Department is pleased to participate in the National 9/11 “Freedom Flag” Raising Call to Action on Patriot Day, September 11, 2026, marking the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our Nation. As a participant of this program, Macomb Fire has received a 9/11 Freedom Flag from the Freedom Flag Foundation to be flown annually on Patriot Day below the US Flag through the month of September, along with a WTC Steel artifact recovered from Tower 1 at Ground Zero in New York City. Macomb Fire has also received a copy of Unfurling the Freedom Flag – A 9/11 Story, by teacher and author Tara R. Krohn. The Freedom Flag was created near Richmond, VA as a simple sketch on a napkin that ultimately became Virginia’s Official Flag of Remembrance for 9/11 (VAC §1-510). Today, the Freedom Flag is our nation’s only codified 9/11 flag of remembrance, and it has been flown or displayed in nearly 2,500 schools, fire stations, and civic buildings and in all 50 states.

Freedom Flag, WTC Steel Artifact, and the 9/11 storybook are on display for public viewing at the Macomb Fire Department, Station 1, 219 West Jackson Street.

Come visit us tomorrow!

The Macomb Fire Department invites the community to join firefighters, city officials, and former members for a special Open House and Rededication Ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary of Fire Station 1.
The event will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 219 W. Jackson Street, Macomb, Illinois. The event is free and open to the public.
The celebration marks five decades of service from the current Fire Station 1, which replaced the department's previous station that served the community from 1912 until 1976. Construction of the current station began following a groundbreaking ceremony in January 1975, and the facility officially opened in March 1976, providing Macomb firefighters with a modern headquarters that continues to serve the community today.
The event will feature:
• 1:00 p.m. Rededication Ceremony recognizing the station's 50 years of service.
• Guided Station Tours showcasing the facility and its history.
• Apparatus Displays featuring both historic and modern fire equipment.
• Family Activities for attendees of all ages.
• Opportunities to meet current and retired firefighters and learn about the department's role in protecting the community.
The original station served the City of Macomb for more than six decades before being replaced by the current facility. Since opening in 1976, Fire Station 1 has housed generations of firefighters who have responded to thousands of emergencies, providing fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, and community risk reduction programs.
