🏗️ Breaking Ground: Building for the Future

Reminder: Join Us tomorrow, October 14, we’ll officially break ground on two more schools included in Phase 2 of the projects made possible by the community’s support of the 2024 Referendum.

📍 10:30 a.m. | Sennett Middle School, 502 Pflaum Rd.

📍 1 p.m. | Cherokee Heights Middle School, 4301 Cherokee Dr.

These new facilities are designed to support modern instruction, foster collaboration and create inclusive, accessible spaces that meet the diverse needs of our students.

We’re excited to celebrate this important investment in our students, schools and community.

🌽 On Friday, our DLI fifth graders hosted an A-maíz-ing Potluck to celebrate the corn-clusion of our ensayos informativos sobre el maíz en español and our corn podcasts in English. Students have been researching corn in English and Spanish, and even welcomed two guest speakers during this unit: a professor from the Department of Plant & Agroecosystem Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Ms. George’s mom, who grew up on a corn farm in Illinois. We incorporated these primary sources into our research.

According to the Iowa Corn Growers Association, corn is an ingredient in over 4,000 everyday products. We put that to the test at our potluck! Students shared cornbread, popcorn, mandocas, corn cereal, chicha morada, tamales, corn cookies, esquites, candy corn, corn chips, corn salsas, and much more!

We also learned that the first indigenous communities to grow corn in modern-day Mexico used it to make dolls. We made our own corn husk dolls in FAB Lab this week. Thank you, families, for your partnership in making our potluck happen! We had a corn-tastic time. 🌽

🌽 El viernes, nuestros alumnos de quinto grado del programa DLI organizaron una comida compartida A-maíz-ing para celebrar la culminación de nuestros ensayos informativos en español y nuestros podcasts in English about corn. Los estudiantes investigaron sobre el maíz en ambos idiomas e incluso recibieron a dos ponentes invitados durante la unidad: una profesora del Departamento de Ciencias de Plantas y Agroecosistemas de la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison y la mamá de la Maestra George, quien creció en una granja de maíz en Illinois. Incorporamos estas fuentes primarias a nuestra investigación.

Según la Asociación de Productores de Maíz de Iowa, el maíz es un ingrediente en más de 4.000 productos cotidianos. ¡Pusimos esto a prueba en nuestra comida compartida! Los estudiantes compartieron pan de maíz, palomitas, mandocas, cereales de maíz, chicha morada, tamales, galletas de maíz, esquites, dulces de maíz, salsas de maíz ¡y mucho más!

También aprendimos que las primeras comunidades indígenas que cultivaron maíz en lo que hoy es México lo utilizaban para fabricar muñecas. Esta semana, nosotros mismos elaboramos muñecas con hojas de maíz en el FAB Lab.

💡 Shine a Light on Someone Making a Difference: Nominate Them for a Purpose Award!

Great things happen when people are committed to a purpose bigger than themselves. The Purpose Award celebrates MMSD students and staff who inspire student success through innovation, leadership and a commitment to educational excellence. 📚✨

Who is helping move MMSD forward? Who is finding new ways to support students, lead with purpose or make learning better? Nominate them for a Purpose Award!

📅 Purpose Award nomination deadline: Oct. 12

Each month, one staff member and students will be recognized at a Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education regular meeting, with honorees also celebrated at an end-of-year celebration.

The Henderson School drive-up food pantry is back! Everyone is welcome. Just drive into the circle driveway in front of the school on the first and third Tuesday of each month between 2:00-3:00 p.m. Our friendly volunteers will help load a variety of fresh produce, meat, dairy, bread and canned goods into your car.
