🐾 THE NOSE KNOWS
TRAILING & MANTRAILING — PART 2
What Is Individual Human Scent?
What makes you smell like YOU?
And how can a dog identify one particular person amongst hundreds of others?
Here’s the interesting part.
You don’t have one single smell.
There isn’t a magical molecule with your name on it.
Your individual scent is a complex, constantly changing mixture influenced by:
* Skin-associated material and natural secretions
* Bacteria and other microorganisms
* Volatile organic compounds
* Clothing and footwear
* Personal hygiene products
* Diet, biology and environment
* Everything you touch and interact with
Together, these contribute to an individual scent profile.
But here’s where trailing and mantrailing become particularly interesting.
We give the dog a scent article, perhaps a T-shirt, glove or other personal possession, and ask it to locate the individual associated with that scent.
Sounds straightforward.
But who else has handled that article?
Has somebody else worn it?
Was it washed with the family’s clothing?
Has it been sitting on a shared sofa?
A scent article is only as reliable as our understanding of its history.
And contamination doesn’t automatically make an article useless, but it certainly matters.
Now consider something else.
The person changes clothes, showers, uses deodorant or walks through a completely different environment.
Their scent picture changes.
Yet a properly trained dog may still be capable of recognising relevant information associated with that individual.
That’s what makes genuine scent discrimination so fascinating.
But we must test what we think we’ve trained.
Can the dog reject another person’s fresher trail?
Can it discriminate between family members?
Can it ignore the wrong person?
Can it work without visual clues or handler assistance?
Because finding somebody isn’t necessarily proof that the dog has identified them through individual scent.
TRAIN THE DOG — TEST THE CLAIM.
The scent article doesn’t magically create discrimination.
Training does.
And the more we understand about human scent, the better we can design our training.
No magic. No folklore. Just biology, learning and some extraordinary canine capabilities.
NEXT — PART 3: Building the Mantrailing Dog
We’ll look at taking a complete beginner and systematically developing the foundations of a reliable trailing dog.
