Body safety conversations can start earlier than you may think. 💬

For children ages 2–3, everyday moments can help teach simple ideas like personal space, consent, and respecting how someone else wants to show affection.

These conversations do not have to be big or complicated. Small, consistent reminders can help children understand that their body belongs to them and that their boundaries matter.

Every child deserves someone who shows up, listens, and stays. 💙

Thank you to the Widen Family Foundation for supporting Canopy Center’s CASA program! This grant will help us recruit, train, and support volunteers who build trusted relationships with children who have experienced abuse or neglect and advocate for their needs.

We're grateful for this continued partnership. The future is bright for all children.

This month’s groups will be held on:

📍 Tuesday, October 20 from 4-5 PM at Canopy Center
💻 Wednesday, October 28 from 6-7 PM via Zoom

Body safety conversations can start before children have the words to respond. 💙

Using accurate names for body parts, noticing nonverbal cues, avoiding forced affection, and explaining everyday care can help build trust and respect from the very beginning.

Save these tips, share them with another caregiver, and follow along for the next post in our body safety series.

Even a month into the school year, children may still be finding their footing - and changes in behavior can offer important clues about how they’re adjusting.

Ongoing sleep problems, frequent stomachaches, withdrawal, anger or reluctance to attend school may be signs that they need additional support. Pay attention, check in gently and remind them they can always come to you. 💙

September is National Kinship Care Month 💙

When a child needs safety, stability, and connection, grandparents, relatives, and other trusted adults often step forward. Across Canopy Center’s programs, we see how these relationships and support systems can help children feel safe and supported - whether they are served through CASA, Parent to Child, or Oasis.

This month, we recognize all of the kinship caregivers who help children stay connected in moments of uncertainty.

Mishelle’s advocacy for children recently took her all the way to Melbourne, Australia. 🇦🇺

At the 2026 ISPCAN Congress (ISPCAN is the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect), she drew on her family’s lived experience to speak with professionals and child advocates from around the world.

In our latest newsletter, Mishelle shares more about medical child abuse and how her experience informs her work as a CASA Case Coordinator.

The transition back to school can bring big emotions, even after the first few days.

Challenging behavior may be a sign that a child is feeling overwhelmed, tired, or anxious. When that happens, try to connect before you correct. Pause, help them feel calm and understood, and then address the behavior together.

When children feel safe and supported, they’re better able to communicate what they need and respond to guidance. 💙

The forecast kept us guessing - fitting for a night inspired by Wonderland - but Mad Hatter’s Bingo was a success, raising more than $8,000 for Canopy Center’s CASA program. 🐇🎩🎉

For a small nonprofit, this support makes a significant difference. It helps us provide consistency, advocacy, and connection for approximately 100 children who have experienced abuse and neglect in Dane and Columbia County. Having a trusted adult who continues to show up can change the trajectory of a child’s life.

It was especially meaningful to spend the evening with so many of our CASA volunteers - people who already give generously of their time to support children in our community. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us, played bingo, purchased raffle tickets, and helped make the evening a success. 🤗

Thank you to our generous sponsors: Arbor Green; American Family Insurance; Sheila Link Agency, Inc - American Family- Portage, Baraboo, WI; Cardinal FG Portage; Community Bank of Portage; Crawford Oil and Propane; EK Machine; Miller, Brussell, Ebben and Glaeske LLC; Portage State Bank; Poynette Ironworks LLC; and Turning Point Realty.

The start of a new school year is a good time to make sure children know where they can turn for support.

Talk with your child about who they trust at school and at home when they feel worried, unsafe, or confused. Identifying those people before they are needed can make it easier for children to speak up—and reminds them they never have to face a difficult situation alone.

Most importantly, remind your child that asking for help is a strength. 💙
