Making downtown Madison more beautiful one mum at a time. Mall Concourse & State Street Maintenance crews planted chrysanthemums in planters and flower beds along the Capitol Square and State Street.

Mall Concourse maintenance is a City of Madison service within the Parks Division, that provides cleaning and maintenance services for city sidewalks in the greater State Street and Capitol Square area, also known as State Street Mall and Capitol Concourse. Can You Spot Parks Conservation Staff in These Photos?
Neither can we!😲

That vine covering everything is porcelain berry — an invasive plant that grows fast and out-of-control. In just one growing season, it can reach 15 to 20 feet long and seems to never stop spreading.

Porcelain berry leaves are deeply lobed and look a lot like native grapevine leaves, which can make them hard to tell apart. The easiest way to identify them is by their berries:

🦠Porcelain berry: Berries range in color from robin’s egg blue to dark purple.

šŸ‡Grapes: Berries are larger, deep blue to purple, and usually found in clusters. (See photos for comparison!)

These photos were taken during a recent project along the boundary at Owen Conservation Park, where porcelain berry has become a big issue. šŸ’Ŗ

Interested in helping us manage invasive plants like this? We'd love your help — this year or in the future! cityofmadison.com/parks/volunteer

The Friends of Owen Conservation Park host regular volunteer workdays and educational events. Come join us! šŸ‘

Earlier this summer, Parks staff discovered Oak Wilt in Meadow Ridge Conservation Park. Oak Wilt is a disease caused by a fungus that attacks oak trees, causing them to wilt and die and there is no known cure. Following Oak Wilt management guidance provided by the WI DNR, Parks staff have extensively assessed the area and developed a thoughtful and future-forward plan. We are moving quite quickly, as we have determined starting the work very soon will allow a better opportunity to save more trees for potential treatment next year.

To learn about our mitigation, treatment and future plantings, see the latest blog post: Maintaining a Healthy Tree Canopy in Madison's Parks.

The blog includes more images and a detailed mitigation map and a future conditions & plantings map.
