Hills I’ll die on…

I didn’t run for office to agree with everyone, play politics, or forget where I came from.

I ran to represent working families, uplift our communities, and make sure Milwaukee’s South Side always has a voice at the table.

Some things I’m simply not willing to compromise on.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic violence is not always obvious or visible. So many stories are often kept private. This month, take a moment to recognize the courage it takes to seek safety, and know that no one should have to navigate abuse alone.

Awareness matters. Not because this one month changes everything, but because honest conversations can help break the silence and remind people that they are not alone.

I'm sharing some photos from our event last October in the Capitol alongside my colleagues and community members who provide resources for survivors and those experiencing domestic violence.

I still remember the powerful truths that were shared this day. Thank you to those individuals who had the courage to share their stories.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available. Call the 24/7 Milwaukee Domestic Violence Hotline at (414) 933-2722, and remember that you are not alone.

This year, for Hispanic Heritage Month, I want to recognize a few individuals whose contributions have had a meaningful impact not only in District 9, but throughout Wisconsin’s Hispanic community.

I am delighted to recognize Daniel Zea Zapata, more commonly known on-air as DZ, whose journey reflects perseverance, cultural pride, and a deep commitment to giving back to his community. Through his work with 103.7 KISS-FM as co-host of Alley & DZ, as well as his role as an in-game host for the Milwaukee Bucks, DZ has become a trusted presence in the Milwaukee community. DZ has elevated and utilized his platform to serve others, addressing hunger, youth engagement, animal welfare, and more as a mentor and community personality. As a proud Colombian immigrant and Wisconsin college graduate, DZ’s personal and professional journey serves as an inspiration to others and is opening doors for the next generation.

Another organization deserving of recognition is Buena Tierra Run Club, a nonprofit that has built a powerful and inclusive health and wellness community in Milwaukee. Through free running and wellness programming, the Latino-based running club has harnessed the power of running to promote physical and mental well-being while challenging barriers and reshaping the narrative surrounding health and wellness within Wisconsin’s Hispanic communities. Their work has created a welcoming and accessible space that is investing in our community’s health, and giving people a sense of belonging and personal empowerment.

I am pleased to honor and thank Buena Tierra’s founders for their dedication, leadership, and continued service to our community:

Patrick Chaves
Mylah Rice
Carter Amundson
Jesus Hernandez
Zecilia Alamillo
Ana Andrade
Arturo Ramos
Michael Tiskus

It is a privilege to recognize all of these local leaders and present them with a legislative citation in honor of their service, pride, and resilience during Hispanic Heritage Month.

Congratulations to you all, and thank you for the lasting impact you continue to make in our community. ¡Juntos hacemos más!

Grateful to Aurora Health Care for the invitation to celebrate The Beacon!

This is an exciting milestone, transforming a historic school building into a health and wellness center for the community. From healthcare and dental care, to workforce development and housing support, it is encouraging to see these services all under one roof.

I look forward to seeing The Beacon’s vision become a reality in 2027!

Today marks the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month 2026! To celebrate, the Wisconsin Hispanic Legislative Caucus hosted a press conference at the Capitol to remind us all of our shared purpose as legislators.

Our caucus was created to ensure that Hispanic voices have a stronger presence in Wisconsin’s legislative process and that the issues affecting our communities are heard, understood, and addressed.

This year's theme is Unidos Somos Más, or Together We Do More. Because when we recognize the stories, experiences, and contributions of Wisconsin's diversity, we are sending an important message: your voice and your contributions matter.

And as the Wisconsin Hispanic Legislative Caucus celebrates our second year, we are reminded that our work is bigger than any one legislator or any one legislative session. It is about building representation, creating opportunity, and making sure that future generations see themselves reflected in the halls of government.

As Chair of the WHLC, I am honored to help lead this celebration, and I am so proud of the work our caucus is doing to ensure Hispanic and Latino communities have a seat at the table.

Thank you to our special guests, Dr. Nydia Martinez, Executive Director of the Latino Academy of Workforce Development and Jose Martinez, President and CEO of UMOS, Inc. Milwaukee for being with us today and sharing your stories.

¡Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana! Y ¡Juntos hacemos más!
