TRAFFIC TUESDAY | RURAL INTERSECTIONS

Just because you don’t see another vehicle doesn’t mean one isn’t coming.

When approaching rural intersections:

Look carefully in BOTH directions.
Remember that crops and vegetation may limit your view.
Don’t assume the other driver sees you.
Obey stop and yield signs.
Approach blind intersections prepared to react.

It only takes a few extra seconds to make sure the road is clear.

Slow down. Look twice. Arrive safely.

TRAFFIC TUESDAY | LIGHTS ON

The days are getting shorter, which means more of our daily driving is happening in the dark.

Now is a good time to check your vehicle’s lights.

Headlights
Brake lights
Turn signals
Hazard lights
License plate lights

While you’re at it, clean your headlights and windshield to help improve nighttime visibility.

Being able to see is important.

Making sure everyone else can see YOU is just as important.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This month, we recognize those whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer — those currently fighting, the survivors, their families and loved ones, and those we have lost.

The Sheriff’s Office stands with our community in raising awareness and showing support for everyone affected by breast cancer.

Together, we support. Together, we remember. Together, we hope.

TRAFFIC TUESDAY | DON’T FOLLOW TOO CLOSE

One of the easiest ways to give yourself more reaction time is also one of the simplest:

Back off.

Leaving adequate space between you and the vehicle ahead gives you more time to react to:

Wildlife entering the roadway
Slow-moving farm equipment
Sudden stops
Slick road conditions
Crashes or other hazards ahead

And as rain, frost, ice, or snow arrive, increase that distance even more.

More space = more time to react.

AN HONOR TO SERVE 🇺🇸

Norfolk Police Division officers had the honor of assisting with Vice President JD Vance’s visit to Omaha, serving as drivers during the visit.

We were also proud to serve alongside Captain Greenough of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.

It was a unique opportunity and an honor to represent the Norfolk Police Division, the City of Norfolk, and northeast Nebraska while assisting with this important assignment.

A day we won’t soon forget. 🇺🇸

Proud to serve. Proud to represent Norfolk.

🦌 TRAFFIC TUESDAY | DEER ARE ON THE MOVE

It’s that time of year again.

As we move further into fall, drivers should expect increased deer activity throughout Madison County.

🌅 Be especially alert around dawn and dusk.
👀 Scan the ditches and shoulders ahead.
🦌 If you see one deer, assume there may be more.
🚗 Reduce your speed in areas where visibility is limited.
📵 Staying off your phone gives you valuable reaction time.

And remember: sometimes the safest option is to brake firmly while maintaining control rather than making a sudden maneuver that could put you into another lane or off the roadway.

25 years ago, I had been on night shift (the night before) and had been woken by my wife and one year old daughter. My wife said I needed to see what was on the news. I came out and watched the tv as the plane hit the second tower. Holding my daughter, I watched the rest of the morning...
Never forget, those who ran into the buildings to help. Never forget, those who never made it out. Never forget, those who fought back. Never Forget.

🏍️ TRAFFIC TUESDAY

Look Twice. Save a Life.

Motorcycles are smaller and can be harder to see.

Before changing lanes or turning:
👀 Check your mirrors.
👀 Look over your shoulder.
👀 Give riders extra space.
👀 Never assume their speed or distance.

We’re all sharing the same roads. A second look can make all the difference.
