The Riders Mills Schoolhouse was built in the late 1790s, and it is one of our nation’s oldest public school buildings still in existence. It was also one of America’s last single-room schoolhouses in operation; classes were held every school year until its closing in 1953. It was acquired by the Riders Mills Historical Association in 1966 and is listed on both the State and National Registry of Historic Sites.

The Lichens of Riders Mills
Lichens are some of the most remarkable creatures on Earth. Everywhere and seemingly nowhere. Strong but fragile. They depend on us, but we depend on them. Somehow each one contains a tiny hidden universe completely invisible to our curious eyes. There are hundreds of species growing around us in Old Chatham, probably in places you would least expect. If you want to understand the history of our forests and of ourselves, look no further than lichens. Join us for an adventure to meet neighbors you may not have even known you had.

Dr. James Lendemer is a scientist, author, conservationist, outdoorsman and resident of Riders Mills.

Golden Age of Town Life: Ghent, NY 1900-1925

Come along with Ghent Town Historian Gregg Berninger as he explores town life when people worked together, gathered together, gossiped together, and knew one another far better than we do today. It was a golden age of organic community that holds lessons for us today as we make our way through what some observers have called the age of loneliness.
Gregg Berninger is the Ghent Town Historian and the recipient of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for the use of Literature in Historical Interpretation and the Edgar Stickles Award for Contributions to the Town of Ghent.
