I would like to take a moment to dive a little deeper into my professional background and experience. I joined the United States Marine Corps two days after my eighteenth birthday. I signed on as an infantry rifleman and spent my first year in Keflavik, Iceland conducting security force duties on the Air Force base located there. After that, I transferred to the Marine Corps Fleet in Camp Lejeune, NC and went on to serve as a squad leader, while serving peace keeping missions in Monrovia, Liberia. During that deployment, I was meritoriously promoted to Corporal and put in charge of a twelve man infantry squad, responsible for safeguarding the U.S. Embassy from stray gunfire. After serving for four years, I was honorably discharged and returned to the area.
Shortly after my time in the Marine Corps, I was hired by the Ferry County Sheriff’s Office. Because of the hiring terms of that position, I initially served as a Republic Police Officer. After approximately one year, a position became available within the Sheriff’s Office and I transferred over and began serving as a Deputy Sheriff for the county. I worked patrol for three years and then received a promotion to Detective. That position was a narcotics detective assignment attached to the North Central Washington Narcotics Task Force where I was in charge of operations in Ferry County. During that time, I was responsible for the development and handling of confidential informants that were used as part of casework. Some of the experience I gained included writing and applying for search warrants, body wire affidavits and managing funds, used for the purchase of narcotics. In all, I spent a little over seven years employed by and working for the people of this county.
After my service to Ferry County, I decided to broaden my experience by joining the U.S. Border Patrol. I was initially assigned to Yuma, AZ, but after only two and a half years, I was able to transfer back to my hometown of Curlew. I spent the next seventeen and a half years working here in Ferry County in a number of different capacities. Shortly after my return to Curlew, I was assigned to the Ferry County Sheriff’s Office to assist in working narcotics cases once again. That assignment was a one year partnership, and once completed, I returned to border operations at the Curlew station.
During my Border Patrol time in Curlew, I served as a K9 handler trained in narcotics and human detection. With that, I was called upon many times to conduct K9 searches of the Ferry County Jail, Curlew Job Corps, and assist with numerous traffic stops and search warrants. Other duties I held include serving as a Vehicle Control Officer responsible for fleet management that involved maintenance, purchasing and budget.
Working at a smaller Border Patrol station, like Curlew, required me to act as the shift officer in charge on a weekly or even daily basis. With that, comes the responsibility of ensuring proper coverage of our area through patrolling, personnel assignment, and proper incident response. At times, that included bringing multiple agencies, and their assets, together to complete the task at hand.
In all, I have been serving in law enforcement for over 27 years, with just under 25 of that being right here in Ferry County. I feel that my broad and unique experience, is just what the citizens of Ferry County and their Sheriff’s Office needs.
