Mammoth Spring National Fish Hatchery Welcome to the Mammoth Spring National Fish Hatchery page! For official information on the hatchery

Established in 1903, Mammoth Spring National Fish Hatchery is one of the oldest in the hatchery system. Built in the Ozark foothills of northeast Arkansas due to the availability of water from one of the world's largest springs and the access to the railroad. Some of the species the hatchery works with include: Sturgeon, Gulf Coast Striped Bass, Walleye, and Smallmouth bass. It has also partnered with ASU on projects with a number of freshwater mussel species, the alligator snapping turtle and Ozark Hellbender. Mammoth Spring National Fish Hatchery also has a great volunteer program. Our volunteer opportunities are listed at volunteer.gov or for local volunteering opportunities contact Richard Peek at [email protected] or call 870-625-3912

🍂 As temperatures begin to cool and summer activities start winding down, work at Mammoth Spring National Fish Hatchery continues full speed ahead. Fish still need to be fed, cared for, sorted, and moved throughout the year!
🐟 Recently, hatchery staff spent time moving and weighing Rainbow Trout. But how do you count thousands of fish without counting each one individually?
The answer is MATH! We weigh and count several random samples to determine an average weight per fish. Once we have that information, we can weigh the rest of the fish as they're moved and calculate how many there are. This method is accurate, efficient, and saves a tremendous amount of time and resources.
So, the next time someone asks, "When am I ever going to use math?" tell them it's helping us manage thousands of Rainbow Trout right here at the hatchery!

Fish Fest 2026 was truly one of our most enjoyable events yet. Attendees filled the day with laughter and excitement, reeling in fish after fish and making lasting memories. The atmosphere was vibrant, and it was clear that everyone was having a wonderful time.

We’ve begun uploading photos to the Fish Fest 2026 album, capturing the spirit of the day. Stay tuned—more images will be added as we continue to sort through the collection.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the dedicated volunteers and organizations who made this event possible. Special appreciation to the Friends of Mammoth Spring National Fish Hatchery, Mammoth Spring State Park, Arkansas Game and Fish, Mammoth Spring Beta Club, Mammoth Spring School District, Mammoth Spring Art Department, Fernweh Fly Co, our local volunteers, and everyone else who contributed to making Fish Fest 2026 spectacular.

Your enthusiasm and support are what make events like this so special. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

Follow the link below to see the phots. Don't forget to check the album regularly as photos will continue to be added.
