๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ”ฅ FIREFIGHTER II TRAINING & LIVE BURN CERTIFICATION!๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿš’

Today, members from several Mingo County Fire Departments, along with members of our own station, completed their Firefighter II certification testing and live burn skills!

Throughout the day, firefighters participated in hands-on training exercises involving search and rescue tactics, coordinated interior fire attacks, and fire behavior.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Training like this is essential to ensuring our firefighters have the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to operate safely and effectively when emergencies arise.

๐Ÿ‘ A SPECIAL THANK YOU!๐Ÿ‘

We would like to extend a huge thank you to the Williamson Fire Department for welcoming us, allowing our firefighters to train alongside their members, and providing the facilities necessary to complete today's training and live burn exercises. Your hospitality, cooperation, and commitment to firefighter education are greatly appreciated!

We would also like to recognize and thank **WVPST Eva Godbey for taking the time to come down and conduct our students' Firefighter II certification testing today. Your dedication to firefighter training and professional development helps ensure that firefighters across our region are prepared to serve their communities.

Congratulations to all the firefighters who participated today! Your dedication to continuing your education and improving your skills does not go unnoticed.

๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ”ฅ THE TRAINING NEVER STOPS, BECAUSE THE LIVES WE PROTECT DEPEND ON IT! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿš’

๐Ÿšจ BIG NEWS FOR OUR FIRE DEPARTMENT! ๐Ÿšจ

We are extremely excited to announce that our department has been awarded an approximately $183,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG)!

This is much more than a grant for new equipment. This is an investment in the health, safety, and future of the firefighters who answer the call for our community.

Through this grant, our department will be able to purchase:

๐Ÿงบ A new NFPA-compliant turnout gear washer and extractor

๐Ÿ”ฅ A new NFPA-compliant turnout gear dryer

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš’ 30 complete sets of new bunker gear, including:
โ€ข Helmet
โ€ข Hood
โ€ข Gloves
โ€ข Boots
โ€ข Pants
โ€ข Coat

๐ŸŽ’ 30 new gear bags

WHY IS A TURNOUT GEAR WASHER SO IMPORTANT?

One of the most important parts of this grant is something that may seem simple to the public: properly cleaning our turnout gear.

When firefighters enter a structure fire, we are not only exposed to heat and smoke. Fires can produce hundreds of different chemicals. These contaminants can settle onto and become trapped in our protective clothing.

And the danger doesn't necessarily end when the fire is out.

Contaminants can remain on turnout gear and can transfer to a firefighter's skin, other equipment, the fire apparatus, the fire station, and even personal vehicles and homes. NIOSH has specifically identified contaminated gear as a potential source of continued exposure and notes that some of these contaminants have been linked to cancer and other negative health outcomes.

๐ŸŽ—๏ธ FIREFIGHTER CANCER IS A REAL CONCERN

Cancer has become one of the most important long-term health concerns facing the fire service.

Firefighters can be exposed to cancer-causing substances through inhalation, ingestion, and skin absorption. That exposure doesn't necessarily stop once we leave the fireground. Contaminated PPE can continue exposing firefighters if it is not properly cleaned, removed, transported, and stored.

That is why the fire service has changed.

We know more today than we did years ago.

Years ago, coming back to the station with dirty turnout gear was often considered part of the job. Today, we understand that the soot and contaminants on that gear are not simply dirtโ€”they can contain hazardous substances that we should be working to remove.

Properly cleaning turnout gear is one of the ways we can reduce unnecessary exposure.

Our new washer and extractor will give us the ability to properly clean contaminated PPE using equipment designed specifically for firefighter gear. Our new dryer will allow that gear to be properly dried while helping maintain the integrity and protective properties of the PPE.

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš’ AND THEN THERE'S THE NEW GEAR

This grant will also provide 30 firefighters with new complete sets of bunker gear.

That means 30 firefighters will receive new helmets, hoods, gloves, boots, pants, and coats, along with individual gear bags.

New PPE isn't just about looking good or having the newest equipment.

Properly fitting, properly maintained protective equipment is a critical part of firefighter safety.

As firefighters, we willingly accept a certain amount of risk every time we answer a call. But there is no reason we should accept unnecessary exposure when there are things we can do to reduce it.

This grant helps us take another step toward doing exactly that.

๐Ÿš’ WHAT THIS $183,000+ REALLY MEANS

To someone outside the fire service, this grant might look like:

๐Ÿงบ A washer
๐Ÿ”ฅ A dryer
๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš’ 30 sets of bunker gear
๐ŸŽ’ 30 gear bags

But to us, it means:

Health.

Safety.

Readiness.

Protection.

And investing in the firefighters who protect our community.

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to receive this funding. Grants like the AFG program allow departments to obtain critical equipment that can be difficult, and sometimes impossible, to purchase through normal operating budgets.

We are proud to put these funds toward equipment that will help protect our members not only during the fire, but also from the hazards that can follow us home from the fire.

Because the goal isn't simply to make sure our firefighters survive the call.

The goal is to make sure they come home healthyโ€”and continue coming home for years to come.โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน๐Ÿš’

We want to thank everyone who has supported our department and continues to support the men and women who serve this community.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿš’ We are proud to serve. We are proud to invest in our firefighters. And we are proud to continue moving our department forward.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ September 11, 2001 โ€” We Remember. We Honor. We Never Forget.๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the countless lives that were forever changed that day.

We remember the 343 firefighters, 60 law enforcement officers, EMS providers, military members, and thousands of innocent civilians who never made it home.

But the story of September 11 did not end that day.

The number of lives lost because of 9/11 continues to grow. In the years since, countless first responders, recovery workers, survivors, and members of the community have lost their lives to illnesses connected to the attacks and the recovery efforts. For many who answered the call, the fight continued long after the fires were extinguished and the rubble was cleared.

As members of the fire service, we understand what it means to answer a call knowing there is danger aheadโ€”and to go anyway.

September 11 reminds us of the courage, sacrifice, brotherhood, and selflessness that define our profession. It reminds us that every firefighter who puts on the uniform carries the responsibility of protecting those who may never know our name.

Today, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We honor those who continue to suffer from the lasting effects of that day.

And we stand with the families who have carried that loss for 25 years.

Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. Their stories will never be forgotten. And as long as we wear this uniform, we will continue to remember.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Never Forget.
๐Ÿš’ Never Forgotten.

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿš’ PLEASE JOIN US IN CONGRATULATING JUNIOR FIREFIGHTER HUNTER TOLER!๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ”ฅ

We are proud to congratulate Junior Firefighter Hunter Toler on successfully completing his Firefighter I training and live burns today!

Completing Firefighter I is no small accomplishment. It requires hours of classroom instruction, hands-on training, practical skills, testing, and finally putting those skills to work during live-fire training. Hunter has worked hard to reach this milestone, and we are extremely proud to see that hard work pay off.

Even more exciting, Hunterโ€™s completion brings our total to 8 out of 12 Junior Firefighters who have now successfully completed their Firefighter I certification!๐Ÿ‘

8 certified โ€” 4 more to go!

Having this many young members committed to completing their training is something we are incredibly proud of. These Junior Firefighters represent the next generation of the fire service, and every certification earned helps build a stronger, better-trained department for the future.

Hunter, congratulations on this accomplishment! Keep learning, keep training, and keep pushing forward. This is only the beginning! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿš’

Please help us congratulate Firefighter Hunter Toler on a job well done! ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿ‘ฝ Today's Training: Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat) Operations*โ˜ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿš’

If you happened to drive past the old Man Hospital today, you may have spotted what looked like a group of aliens... or maybe a few oversized Minions wandering around. ๐Ÿ‘ฝ๐ŸŸก

Don't worryโ€”we can confirm that Earth is still safe, and there has not been an alien invasion!

What you were actually seeing was members of our department, along with students in the Firefighter I class being hosted by us and Gilbert Volunteer Fire Department, completing the Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat) Operations portion of their training.

Today, students received valuable hands-on experience in:
โœ… Hazardous materials containment and
confinement techniques
โœ…Isolation Procedures
โœ…Hazardous Material Identification
โœ… Proper donning and doffing of Level A and Level B protective suits
โœ… Decontamination procedures
โœ… Operating within the Incident Command System (ICS)
โœ… Working safely and effectively during hazardous materials emergencies and other emergency incidents
โœ…So much more!

While these suits may look a little unusual, they're designed to protect firefighters from dangerous chemicals and other hazardous substances they may encounter on emergency scenes. Training like this ensures our firefighters are prepared to respond safely, protect one another, and keep our communities safe when the unexpected happens.

So, if you saw a few "space people" walking around today, there's no need to panic. It was just your local firefighters trading in bunker gear for Haz-Mat suits and continuing to sharpen the skills that help us serve our communities every day.

Because when the real emergency happens, we'd rather have the experience and not need it than need it and not have it. ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ’ช

And with that, the Town of Man's Independence Day celebration has come to an end. What an incredible way to celebrate America's 250th Birthday! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŽ†

As always, thank you to the Town of Man Fire Department for inviting us, along with the Buffalo Creek Volunteer Fire Department, to be a part of this annual tradition. It is an honor to help keep our community safe while celebrating our nation's independence.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the fireworks and festivities. We also appreciate your patience and cooperation during traffic controlโ€”it helped make the evening safe and enjoyable for everyone.

We hope you all had a wonderful Independence Day. Stay safe, and we'll see you again next year! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿš’๐ŸŽ‡
