E-BIKE SAFETY REMINDER
E-bikes remain a popular way to get around, but their increased speed and weight make safe, responsible riding especially important.
- Wear a helmet. Connecticut law requires all e-bike riders to wear one. For higher-speed riding, choose a helmet designed and rated appropriately for those speeds.
- Be visible. Use proper lights and reflectors, especially at night and in low-visibility conditions.
- Follow the rules of the road. Connecticut law considers e-bikes vehicles. Ride with traffic, obey traffic signals and signs, and use appropriate hand signals.
- Know where you can ride. Trail and multi-use path rules can vary by e-bike class and local regulations.
- Know your e-bike. Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes have a maximum speed of 20 mph, while Class 3 e-bikes can reach 28 mph. Where an e-bike may be operated on trails and multi-use paths can vary depending on its classification and local regulations.
- Parents: consider whether your child is ready. E-bikes can travel 20 mph or faster and require coordination, judgment, and awareness of traffic. Just because a child can legally operate certain e-bikes does not necessarily mean they are ready to do so safely.
Whether you're riding around the neighborhood, commuting, or enjoying the trails, ride responsibly, stay alert, and look out for one another.
