Residents whose collection day falls on the holiday (Monday) should place their items for pickup on the following day (Tuesday). All other residents should put their items out on their normal collection day, but may experience delays of up to 24 hours.

Congratulations to our May 2026 Employee of the Month, Nick Provencher of the Parks, Recreation & Cemetery Division! Nick has been with DPW full-time for just over 2 years, but has been working for us seasonally since 2017. Nick started with DPW as a Fun in the Sun counselor just after he graduated high school, and in the following years was promoted from counselor to site supervisor to program director. He is now our full-time Recreation Coordinator—not just for Fun in the Sun, but for all our recreation programs, permitting, and scheduling!

Nick’s dedication to his craft is well-known throughout the Manchester youth sports community. He was recently featured on the front page of the NH Union Leader for his work coaching for Memorial. Youth sports and summer activities for Manchester kids quite literally would not be the same without him! Nominations submitted for Nick highlighted his organizational skills, work ethic, and dependability. One employee wrote, “Nick always goes above and beyond to serve the people of Manchester and the surrounding communities that utilize our recreation facilities. He works crazy hours to get this done.”

Nick, thank you for everything you do for youth sports and public recreation in the City of Manchester. We are lucky to have you, and we appreciate you!

Help keep your grass green and our water clean! Many of us in Manchester value having finely maintained lawns and enjoy the time we spend working on them. However, some lawn care practices can cause water quality problems. Plants need nutrients to grow, but excess nutrients, including the nitrogen and phosphorus found in fertilizers, can run off when it rains and cause problems in local water bodies. Too many nutrients in water can trigger algal blooms that cloud water and rob it of oxygen. Here are some easy, water-quality friendly lawn care and fertilizer practices for creating and maintaining a truly healthy lawn that looks great AND is safer for the environment!

• Test your soil and only apply fertilizer when necessary
• Apply fertilizer sparingly and ensure proper application
• Apply fertilizers only in the spring and early fall
• Choose slow-release fertilizers with low or no phosphorus when possible
• Mow grass no shorter than three inches high
• Leave clippings on the lawn after mowing so they can return nutrients to the soil

Congratulations to our April employee of the month, Kelly Gill! Kelly is the office administrator for the DPW HR team. She has been with the City of Manchester for 3 years, two of those with DPW. This is a very busy season for Kelly and her team. Every year, Kelly is responsible for the hiring and onboarding process for all of DPW’s seasonal workers—Fun in the Sun counselors, lifeguards, and extra help for Parks & Rec during the growing season. Within just a few weeks every spring, her HR team brings on 137 temporary employees!

Our full-time employees also know they can always rely on Kelly to help them with any questions they may have, from benefits enrollment to FMLA eligibility. Her willingness to help others was mentioned nine separate times in the various nominations submitted for her! Her cheerful, bubbly demeanor brings joy to the workplace and puts people instantly at ease. She is an incredible asset to our administrative team, and we are lucky to have her.

Kelly, we appreciate you and everything you do. Thank you for your service to our employees and the City of Manchester!

The first 2026 Household Hazardous Waste Collection event has been scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026 from 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM at the Drop Off Facility, 500 Dunbarton Road. During this event, Manchester residents may come to the Drop Off to dispose of up to 10 gallons of liquid and 20 pounds of solid household hazardous waste at no cost. Liquids should be in clearly labeled containers no larger than five gallons each. Containers should be carried individually or in boxes, not in garbage bags. Participants must bring proof of Manchester residency.

Hazardous wastes should never be placed in the trash or poured down a drain. Common household hazardous wastes include anti-freeze, button cell and rechargeable batteries (not alkaline), cleaners and disinfectants, mercury thermometers, fluorescent bulbs, pesticides, solvents, and oil-based paints, stains & thinners. In spite of the dreary April showers we’ve been having, the DPW Highway Operations and Sewer & Drain teams are working hard on improvements to Crystal Lake Park! While the Operations team re-paves the road and parking lot, the Sewer & Drain crew will be installing some drainage upgrades to help improve water quality by diverting runoff away from the lake. Due to the extensive nature of the construction work, the park has been closed to visitors while the work is ongoing, but don’t worry—we anticipate completing this project before May 10 so the improvements will be ready for visitors to enjoy this summer season.

The City of Manchester's annual Inner City Street Sweeping Program will begin on Wednesday, April 1 and Thursday, April 2. This program is part of our ongoing commitment to improving roadway cleanliness and maintenance for residents and businesses. Scheduled street sweeping will take place on the first Wednesday and Thursday of each month from April through November to support regular maintenance and ensure effective debris removal.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to follow all posted parking restrictions on scheduled sweeping days. Vehicles parked in violation of posted signs may be ticketed and towed to ensure crews can perform sweeping operations efficiently and safely.
