Welcome Center & The Museum Store. Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home is located in the quintessential Vermont village of Manchester. Robert Lincoln, the only child of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln to survive to adulthood, built his ancestral home in 1905. It was only occupied by the Lincoln family until 1975. Hildene’s 412 acres include the historic home, a goat dairy, restored Pullman car, a working farm and 12 miles of walking trails; a formidable landscape to put Hildene’s mission, Values into Action, into practice. The formal garden boasts a thousand peony blooms, many from the original plants which date back to 1908. The Rowland Agricultural Center at Hildene Farm houses our cheese making facility and is home to a herd of Nubian goats, whose milk is used to produce our goat cheese. 2011 marked the arrival of the 1903 Pullman Palace car, Sunbeam. It is a beautiful example of a wooden Pullman car, but more importantly, we use Sunbeam to tell the paradoxical story “Many Voices,” those of the Company, High Society, African American Pullman porters and us; our guests and our staff. We also offer excellent educational opportunities for children. From our school programs to summer camps, our staff engages youngsters in subjects including agriculture, natural science and history. For more information on Hildene please contact us, we would love you hear from you. Our phone number is 800.578.1788 or you can email us at [email protected].

From Fleece to Felt: A Hands-On Afternoon at Hildene Farm

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24 | 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Two hundred years ago, nearly every hillside you can see from Hildene was sheep pasture. On Saturday, October 24, you can spend a couple of hours finding out how that happened, meet the flock that carries the story forward today, and go home with something you made from their wool. It’s free, there’s no sign-up, and all are welcome.

A Fall Afternoon at Hildene with Kids

Emma had a picture in her head of what Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home was. “It’s been on our list for years to come visit, but honestly, the thought of touring a beautiful historic home with curious and handsy toddlers was enough to keep us saying, ‘Next year.’ I’m so glad that our friends brought us on a whim and showed us what we’ve been missing.”

She came on a late-September afternoon with her five-year-old and her almost-two-year-old, alongside a friend whose family has been coming for years, with a four-year-old and a seven-month-old in tow. Four kids under six, one stroller, and a sky with nothing in it but blue. What follows is how that afternoon actually went, from a parent who had never been here before.

Fall Meadow Maintenance for Pollinators

Ecological stewardship is at the forefront of landscape management decisions at Hildene, where maintaining habitat and food sources for pollinators and songbirds is a priority. With these species facing considerable environmental challenges, Hildene takes an ecological approach to landscape maintenance, working with nature rather than against it. Meadow management is one important way we support wildlife and promote healthy ecosystems.

Meadows provide vital habitat for pollinators and beneficial insects throughout the year, offering food, host plants, nesting sites, and places to overwinter. They also provide food and shelter for a wide range of wildlife, including birds, small mammals, amphibians, and reptiles.

Peony Dividing at Hildene

Last week, we got our hands dirty in the Formal Garden with one of our favorite fall projects: peony dividing! Division is simply creating new peony and other clumping plants which will be a clone of the parent.

Fall is an ideal time to divide peonies, when the plants are entering dormancy and can be carefully lifted, separated, and replanted. From just 11 mature peony plants, we were able to make an incredible 130 divisions, each with the potential to grow into a beautiful, long-lived plant.

Many of these divisions will be used to grow plants for sale, helping share a little piece of Hildene’s gardens far and wide. Larger pieces with more growing buds or “eyes” are replanted throughout the gardens proliferating as they have for the last 120+ years.

This tradition is a satisfying reminder that in a garden, a little digging can go a very long way!

Docents of Hildene

“My favorite part of Hildene is the conversations with guests from all over the world. And many visitors do not know as much about Abraham Lincoln’s family as they thought they did and almost nothing about the reality of the Pullman Porters. Also being here, often outdoors, four seasons a year is priceless.”
