In recognition of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, the St. Tammany Parish Council has declared October as "Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in St Tammany Parish."
Councilman Smith honored the important work of Kristi Lamarque-Bordelon and St. Tammany Health System in championing compassionate bereavement care with a proclamation during the October 2026 Council Meeting.
The Louisiana Legislature recently passed Angel’s Law, formally known as the Perinatal Bereavement Care Initiative, a landmark legislation establishing consistent standards for bereavement care for Louisiana families experiencing the loss of an infant or child to help ensure the quality of care a grieving family receives is not determined by where they live or which hospital they enter
Angel’s Law was championed by Kristi Lamarque-Bordelon, a nurse with St. Tammany Health System, who recognized an unmet need among bereaved families and worked to create meaningful and lasting change based on both her own personal experience and professional work supporting families through loss.
Angel’s Law provides that hospitals with maternity or neonatal intensive care services have access to specialized cooling devices, such as a Caring Cradle or CuddleCot, allowing families additional, unhurried time to hold, bond with, and say goodbye to their baby.
The Angel’s Law also promotes education and specialized training for healthcare personnel in compassionate communication and bereavement support, while helping connect grieving parents with counseling, support groups, and community resources. These compassionate bereavement practices are already being provided at St. Tammany Health System, demonstrating the importance of ensuring that families receive meaningful support during one of the most difficult moments of their lives.
