Louisiana continues to make tremendous progress in restoring and protecting our waterways, thanks to the commitment of our state, local, and private partners.
In St. Tammany Parish the long-abandoned Bayou DeZaire houseboat in Madisonville, has finally been removed—just in time for the Wooden Boat Festival. This is part of President Cooper and the Parish Council’s ongoing initiative to eliminate 57 abandoned vessels that pose environmental and safety hazards.
After a competitive nationwide selection process, Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government, secured a $1 million National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) grant through the BoatUS Foundation to build on the 2025 sunken vessel removal effort. Since then, over 100 derelict vessels have been cleared, including 50 through BoatUS funding, with about 30 more planned.
In the Lake Manchac area as Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) removed 15 derelict vessels through a strong collaboration among DOTD, Air Products Lake Maurepas Community Fund, Osprey Initiative, ELOS Environmental, and Blair Construction.
The Lieutenant Governor Nungesser highlights that beyond the navigational hazard, removing these abandoned vessels is essential to the health of our waterways. When we care for our waterways, we care for our heritage, our environment, and our way of life. Your dedication is helping ensure a cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful Louisiana for all.
Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana and Keep Louisiana Beautiful extend sincere thanks to every agency, organization, and community member working to protect Louisiana’s waters. 🎉💙
