Today is Purim, traditionally one of the most joyous holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination. One of the central commandments related to Purim is the reading of the Book of Esther known as the Megillah, which means scroll. It is customary to hold celebrations on Purim, to perform plays and parodies.
This online exhibition explores some of the ways that Purim was observed throughout Europe prior to the Holocaust, during the Holocaust years, and in the displaced persons camps following the war.

On 28 February 1944, the Ten Boom family, which had been actively involved in hiding and finding safe shelter for Jews in Holland, was betrayed and their home was raided.

The people in hiding managed to escape in time, but all of the members of the Ten Boom family and 30 other co-workers were apprehended and taken to prison for interrogation.

Casper, Corrie (Cornelia) and Elisabeth Ten Boom were recognized as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.
