πŸš‘ This week, four members of Riley County EMS attended EMS World Expo in Orlando, Florida!

EMS World Expo is one of the largest EMS education events in the world, bringing together thousands of EMS professionals from across the United States and around the globe.

We’re excited that two members of our team, Alex and Hannah, had the opportunity to serve as instructors at this year’s conference. They presented two courses this year. Breaking Bad News, a course focused on helping EMS professionals navigate some of the most difficult conversations we have with patients and families. They also instructed the Mental Health Resiliency Officer Course, which provides EMS professionals with tools and strategies to support mental health, build resilience, and promote the well-being of their peers.

Captain Sherry Reinhardt and Paramedic Ryan Brock are also attending this year’s conference. Throughout the week, they are taking part in educational sessions, exploring new developments in EMS, and connecting with professionals from agencies across the country. Opportunities like EMS World Expo allow our providers to learn from other EMS systems, exchange ideas and experiences, and bring new knowledge and perspectives back to their coworkers and the communities we serve.

We are proud of Sherry, Hannah, Ryan, and Alex for their commitment to continued learning, professional growth, and strengthening the care we provide to our community!

NEWS RELEASE: Multi-Vehicle Crash and Rescue on Highway K-18 Near Ogden

(Riley County, KS – September 26, 2026) At approximately 8:44 p.m. on Friday, September 25, emergency responders were dispatched to a multi-vehicle crash on Highway K-18 near the East Riley Avenue offramp at Ogden. Four vehicles were involved in the crash.

When responders arrived, people at the scene reported that a woman who had been standing on the shoulder jumped from the bridge to avoid being struck by another vehicle which was swerving to avoid debris and other vehicles in the roadway. She fell approximately 70 feet and sustained major injuries.

Riley County Emergency Medical Services and Riley County Fire District #1 searched for the patient and provided aid. The Manhattan Fire Department was called to assist and used high-angle rescue equipment to lift the woman from the area below the bridge.

The patient was transported to Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan and later taken to Topeka for additional treatment. She was reported to be in critical condition at the time of transport. No further details about her condition are available. No other injuries were reported.

Responding agencies included the Riley County Police Department, Riley County Fire District #1, Riley County Emergency Medical Services, Manhattan Fire Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Kansas Department of Transportation.

β€œManhattan Fire Department is grateful for the coordinated response by all agencies involved,” said MFD Battalion Chief Keith Habbart. β€œThe quick thinking, teamwork, and professionalism shown by responders helped ensure the patient could be rescued and transported for further care.”

β€œWe appreciate all the coordination amongst the agencies and responders on scene,” said RCFD #1 Fire Chief Doug Russell. β€œWe’ve built trust over many years of working side by side, and that trust matters when people need us to work together quickly and effectively like we did for this rescue.”

Corporal Jonathan Shepard of the Riley County Police Department added, β€œThis was a complex and rapidly developing scene. The coordinated effort allowed responders to safely manage the crash scene and complete the rescue.”

K-18 reopened at approximately 11:35 PM. The nearby Union Pacific Railroad line was also closed briefly, from approximately 9:20 PM to 10:00 PM while crews searched for the patient.

Back in mid-February fo 2026, Riley County EMS responded to a call near Miller and Amherst and quickly discovered this call was one they won't forget! When they arrived, Alisa Kerns was giving birth in her car and sweet baby Liam wasn’t waiting for anyone to get to the hospital!

Our EMS crew jumped into action, providing care to Alisa and helped safely deliver Liam. Once Liam made his grand entrance, EMS transported both Mom and baby to the hospital for further care.

Now, months later, the Kern family reached back out to say thank you and gave us permission to share their story and celebrate this very special moment with our community. πŸš‘πŸ‘

We’re grateful we got to be there for Liam’s big arrival and even more grateful to hear from the Kerns family again. Congratulations, Kerns family!

KSTATE GAME DAY AFTER-ACTION FOR RILEY COUNTY EMS:

For Saturday's game, Riley County EMS crews began arriving at HQ at Station 1 before heading to the stadium, with crews arriving on-site at 3:30 p.m. A pregame meeting helped everyone get organized and ready for the evening.

Throughout the game, EMS personnel were positioned throughout the stadium and parking areas, including both first aid rooms, upper-level positions, mobile units, and the EMS supervisor position.

Crews remained on-site through the evening, with the final crew member leaving HQ at 10:40 p.m.

From the dispatch room to the field, our crews worked together to provide coverage and care wherever it was needed.

🏈 Your Game-Day EMS Team at K-State Football

When thousands of fans pack the stadium for a K-State football game, Riley County EMS is there to help!

Here’s what game-day EMS coverage looks like:

πŸš‘ 12 EMS personnel dedicated to the stadium and parking lots
β€’ Paramedics and EMTs stationed at East and West First Aid Stations
β€’ 2 mobile medic UTVs, one on each side of the stadium, responding throughout the stadium and parking areas
β€’ A dedicated field medical team for emergencies on the field
β€’ An EMT stationed in the upper east section
β€’ An EMS supervisor coordinating medical responses throughout the stadium and parking lots
β€’ 2 ambulances available for patient transport

πŸš’ Manhattan Fire Department also provides 4 personnel to assist with EMS operations and other game-day needs.

During those early-season games when temperatures are higher and patient volume tends to increase, an additional EMT is added to each first aid station, bringing game-day EMS staffing to 14 personnel.

All of this happens in addition to the crews already on duty and covering the rest of Riley County.

So while you're cheering on the Cats, know that a dedicated team of EMS professionals is ready to respond if you need them.
