Northwest District Fire Management Officer Madison Reed and Smokey Bear spent one day of Fire Prevention Week with their friends in Stockton to talk about fire prevention and fire safety! Madison and Smokey talked with two preschool classes, a kindergarten class and first grade class!

In mid-September, our Tech Team, conservation tree staff, and water quality forester spent the day collecting black walnuts for future use in both conservation trees and direct-seeding plantings. Many hands make light work when it comes to seed collection, and a team of six full-time staff and several students worked to fill and hull two ProBoxes of walnuts!

Smokey Bear was thrilled to join the Stockton Volunteer Fire Department at Stockton Elementary School for High-Five Friday! Thanks to our friends for helping us spread Smokey's message about personal responsibility in preventing wildfires!

At the end of September, our Tech Team accompanied Fire Mechanics Gabe and Logan to Fort Leonard Wood to pick up three HMMVWs and drive them back to Kansas for use in the FFP Program. The FFP program allows federal government vehicles to be distributed to local fire departments and then repurposed for firefighting.

We are appreciative of this cross-programmatic collaboration to help put important equipment in the hands of Kansas fire departments 👏 👏 👏

📣 New Kansas Champion Tree
Last month, our Tech Team was assisting in completing a street tree inventory in Hays and came across a tree that they did not recognize. After a closer look, they determined it was an American Mountain Ash or Sorbus americana. In Kansas, we have never had this tree on our champion tree list, so it became our statewide champion!
