COMING TO LIFE: Mia is holding a rendering of what will become the new Be Able Works Academy classroom.

Right now, this space is still a storage area. Soon, we hope it becomes a place where neighbors build workforce skills, confidence, consistency, and long-term stability.

We’re working to finish fundraising this year and begin construction early next year.

Because this project is about more than improving a building. It’s about creating space for people to grow!

MEN HELPING MEN... That’s what The Guardians are all about.

For years, they’ve partnered with Be Able because they want to see men employed, housed, pursuing sobriety, caring for their families, and building better lives.

What we especially appreciate is that they understand how much practical barriers matter. Sometimes moving forward starts with something as simple as a birth certificate, an ID, a car repair, or help getting to the next appointment.

Remove the barrier, and the next step becomes possible.

We’re grateful The Guardians took time today to learn more about our housing program and how they can best support men in recovery. We’re blessed by their partnership.

THE WARM HANDOFF: Scott keeps this bright red oven mitt in his desk drawer for a reason.

It’s a reminder of one of the most important parts of how Be Able works!

We build trust. We listen. We learn what someone actually needs.

Then, when another organization is better equipped to meet that need, we don’t just hand over a phone number and wish them luck.

We make a warm handoff.

That might mean connecting someone to mental health care, addiction treatment, housing resources, or another community partner. Sometimes it means making the call together. Sometimes it means sitting in the meeting to make sure everyone is heard and understood.

Because connection is more than a referral. It’s walking with someone until the next door opens.

SO EXCITING: For the past year, we’ve been working with BG Consultants to plan the next phase of improvements at Be Able... and these renderings are starting to make it feel real.

Outside, the project will improve accessibility with better parking, ramps, walkways, and gathering space. But what we’re most excited about is what will happen inside.

A storage area will be transformed into dedicated classroom space for our newly launched Be Able Works Academy... a place where neighbors can build workforce skills, confidence, and long-term stability.

We hope to finish fundraising this year and begin construction early next year. Because this project is about far more than walls, ramps, and paint. It’s about investing in people. And creating space where real life change can happen.

This little card can make a big difference.

An ID can be an important step toward employment, housing, and new opportunities. On Monday, October 19, the KDOR Mobile DMV Team will be at Be Able to help our neighbors obtain or update their Kansas credentials.

Take advantage of having these services available right here in the community!

We are rallying around an incredible family of four (Mom, Dad, and their 2 children) who are ready for a fresh start but are hitting roadblocks with standard background and credit checks.

The Reality: Like many of us, they made some mistakes in their past. Because of rigid standard rental criteria, those past chapters are closing doors on their future before they even get a chance to speak to a human.

The Truth Today: This family has spent the last few years doing the hard, quiet work of redemption. They have shown immense accountability, put in endless hours of hard work, and completely turned their lives around. They are stable, employed, and ready to be exceptional tenants. They just need one independent property owner who looks at the people, not just the paperwork.

DM or email [email protected]

What they are looking for:
Type: 2+ Bedroom home, apartment, or townhome
Budget: near $1200-1300 month
Move-in target: as soon as available

THIS IS BE ABLE.

Staff. Volunteers. Neighbors. Peer mentors.

Different stories. Different roles. Same community.

Everyone has something to contribute. Everyone has value. Everyone belongs.

That’s what makes Be Able work!

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED!

Mia was brought on our team to lead the Be Able Works Academy. Apparently, that also includes changing the fly trap!

Leadership looks different every day around here. Some days it’s workforce readiness, mentoring, and helping people build stability. Other days… it’s standing on a chair and proudly displaying the fly graveyard! :D

Thanks for doing what needs to be done, Mia.

WOW! A sweet surprise from Purple Glaze Donuts.

They stopped by Be Able last week with trays full of goodies... bierocks, donuts, and, if you ask us, some pretty incredible apple fritters. They brought a lot of smiles with them!

We’re grateful for local businesses that take the time to show up, share generously, and brighten the day for our neighbors. Thank you, Purple Glaze Donuts, and welcome to Manhattan.

We’re saddened by the passing of our friend and volunteer, Jane Houghton.

Jane served faithfully at Be Able for the past couple of years, often working behind the scenes with clothing, showers, laundry, and whatever else needed to be done.

She was feisty, friendly, and full of life.

Jane understood that simple acts of service matter. A clean set of clothes. A load of laundry. A kind word. A smile. She helped make sure our neighbors were treated with dignity and care.

Her presence became part of the rhythm of Be Able, and her absence will be felt. We’re grateful for every hour she gave, every person she encouraged, and the heart she brought through our doors.

Jane, you will be missed.
