Informational post. This scam was witnessed at the Conoco in Manhattan. It's known as the White van speaker scam. Here is what it looks like (it is 100% a scam and they are in the area, not currently in Manhattan):

White Van Speaker Scam — What It Is and How to Avoid It
The white van speaker scam is a long‑running sales fraud where con artists sell cheap, low‑quality speakers as if they were high‑end, premium models — often by claiming they are “leftover” or “overstock” inventory from a reputable audio company.

How the scam works
The setup: Scammers (often called “speakerguys” or “speakermen”) drive around in white vans, SUVs, or rental cars, sometimes with a fake company logo, and approach people in parking lots, gas stations, or other public areas.

The pitch: They claim to have extra speakers due to a “warehouse error,” “inventory overage,” or “boss’s mistake,” and insist they must sell them quickly at a “deep discount”.

The product: The speakers are usually generic, poorly made, and worth far less than the claimed value — sometimes under $30 — but are presented with fake price tags, brochures, or websites showing inflated MSRP prices (often $1,800–$3,500).

Pressure tactics: Sellers use urgency (“we have to unload this before we leave”) and high‑pressure negotiation to close the deal.

After the sale: The gear is often unsellable, may damage your equipment, and has no legitimate warranty or support.

It's Potato Fest!! The parade will start at 11. There is still plenty of parking as of 9:30 in Taylor Park. Don't block people's driveways. Don't park on private property unless you have permission. Don't leave your vehicle in the middle of the street. Main Street and the 100 block of South Broadway will be closed until 4 p.m to vehicle traffic. See the Potato Festival page for a list of events.
