THE ARMORED TANK THE SIZE OF A CAR

Glyptodonts were 2-tonne armadillo relatives the size of a small car, wrapped in a domed shell of solid bone.

One of them, Doedicurus, carried a spiked club on its tail that could shatter the shell of a rival.

They grazed Ice Age South America alongside giant sloths and saber-tooths, too armored to fear almost anything.

A tank with a mace for a tail.

Best armor in prehistory: shell, spikes, or speed?

A CHAMELEON'S TONGUE OUTRUNS A FIGHTER JET'S ACCELERATION

A chameleon's tongue can accelerate at over 250 times gravity: faster than any muscle alone could manage.

The secret is elastic tissue. Muscles load spring-like sheaths, then release them all at once over a cartilage rod.

The sticky tip hits the insect in about 70 milliseconds. The strike is over before the prey's nervous system registers it.

Then retractor muscles reel the meal back like a winch.

Spring-loaded or muscle-powered: which engineering impresses you more?

THE 12-METER CROC THAT HUNTED DINOSAURS

Sarcosuchus imperator was a 12-meter crocodyliform, twice the length of today's biggest crocodiles.

Its long narrow snout was built for grabbing fish, but at that size, dinosaurs drinking at the riverbank were on the menu too.

It lived 110 million years ago, 40 million years before T. rex existed.

The original super croc, and nothing since has matched it.

Could anything beat it in its own river?

THE REAL KING KONG STARVED TO DEATH

Gigantopithecus blacki stood nearly 3 meters tall and weighed up to 300 kilograms: the largest primate that ever lived.

Here is the strange part. We have never found a full skeleton. Everything we know comes from fossil teeth and four lower jawbones, all from caves in southern China.

A 2024 study pinned its extinction to between 295,000 and 215,000 years ago. The forests changed, the fruit disappeared, and an ape that size could not climb trees to find new food.

It survived for two million years, then vanished because it could not adapt its diet.

If it had survived, do you think it could have met early humans?

THE BIRD WITH A 7-METER WINGSPAN

Argentavis was the largest flying bird ever known, with wings spanning 7 meters: wider than a small airplane.

It soared over Miocene Argentina on thermals, barely flapping, scanning the plains like a condor scaled to nightmare size.

Getting airborne at that size meant cliff launches and perfect winds. Flapping was a luxury it couldn't afford.

The sky's heavyweight champion.

Would you ride the thermals with it if you could?

THE ONLY BIRD THAT FERMENTS LIKE A COW

The hoatzin eats leaves: a diet almost no flying bird can survive on. Its answer is a fermentation vat in its chest.

An enlarged crop hosts microbes that break down tough plant matter before it ever reaches the stomach.

The trade-off: fermentation takes space and weight, so hoatzins are clumsy fliers that mostly climb and glide.

It's convergent evolution with ruminants, wearing feathers.

Clumsy but full, or agile but hungry: which strategy wins?

THE RIVER MONSTER BIGGER THAN T. REX

Spinosaurus stretched 14 to 15 meters, longer than a T. rex, and it didn't hunt on land.

Its sail may have displayed or regulated heat. Its paddle-like tail and dense bones point to a life chasing giant fish in Cretaceous rivers.

It was the largest predatory dinosaur known, and it swam.

The king of the rivers makes the land kings look one-dimensional.

Land hunter or river hunter: which is more terrifying?

THE DEER WITH ANTLERS WIDER THAN A CAR

Megaloceros carried the largest antlers of any deer ever: up to 3.6 meters from tip to tip, wider than most cars are long.

Growing that rack every year demanded enormous nutrition. Only the richest Ice Age grasslands could fund it.

When the forests closed in and the open grazing shrank, the giant elk couldn't afford its crown anymore.

It survived until about 7,700 years ago, nearly into recorded history.

Majestic crown or evolutionary burden?

THE DEVIL THAT DRINKS THROUGH ITS FEET

Australia's thorny devil doesn't need to find water to drink. It harvests it from anywhere, even damp sand.

Microscopic channels between its scales pull moisture across the skin by capillary action, routing it toward the mouth.

Standing in a morning dew patch, it can drink without ever opening its jaws at the source.

Its fearsome spikes are mostly for show. Its real superpower is plumbing.

What's the cleverest water trick in nature?

THE SEA LIZARD WITH TEETH ON ITS THROAT

Mosasaurus grew up to 15 meters, but its deadliest feature wasn't its jaws. It was the second set of teeth on the roof of its mouth.

Once prey was grabbed, the throat teeth ratcheted it down like a conveyor belt. There was no spitting this one out.

It wasn't a dinosaur. It was a giant marine lizard, cousin to today's monitor lizards.

The ocean's most inescapable throat.

Mosasaur or megalodon: who wins the sea?
