We got to start off our day in the best way!!

MSPD had the privilege of escorting Bike to School Day for Manitou Springs Elementary School. With Chief Otto leading the way and Detective Strider bringing up the rear, students and their parents completed a safe and fun ride to school.

It is amazing to be part of such a connected community and seeing all of the supportive parents, families, and people who made this possible for the kids.

We can't wait for the next ride

One year has passed since Margaret Woolsey was reported missing. We want to remind our community that this investigation remains active and ongoing.

If you have any information, please contact Detective Strider immediately at 719-685-2542. Even information that may seem insignificant could be helpful.

Please continue to share this case and help us bring answers to Margaret’s family.

A year after Margaret Woolsey was reported missing, investigators continue to search for the 57-year-old Manitou Springs woman and say they suspect foul play in her disappearance.

According to detective Amanda Strider from the Manitou Springs Police Department, Woolsey’s last text was sent on Aug. 9, 2025, and there were no transactions tied to her bank account, which suggests she wasn’t living her typical lifestyle.

The Manitou Springs Police Department has received an increase in traffic complaints regarding electric bicycles (aka e-bikes) and electric motorcycles (e-motorcycles or e-motos). While riding these types of vehicles is fun, MSPD wants to ensure that it is done safely and in compliance with the State of Colorado. Below is a chart to help our residents make informed decisions.

These guidelines are put in place to help keep people safe. In the event a juvenile rider is contacted for suspicion of not following these laws, both the rider and the parents of the juvenile could face legal consequences. These consequences could range from petty traffic offenses to potentially felony charges depending on the circumstances and crime. Our hope is that everyone will ride safe and enjoy the roads of Manitou Springs.

If you're a parent to a juvenile who is a rider and have questions or concerns about your child's safety on the roadways, please contact School Resource Officer Johnson at 719-685-2625.

SCHOOL BUS AND SCHOOL ZONE SAFETY REMINDER

The Manitou Springs Police Department reminds all motorists to use increased caution when driving through school zones and near stopped school buses.

When a school bus is stopped with its stop sign extended, motorists in both directions are required to stop unless the roadway is separated by a physical median. Drivers must remain stopped until the bus retracts its stop sign and begins moving.
Passing a stopped school bus is illegal, dangerous, and places students at serious risk. Motorists should remain stopped, alert, and watch carefully for children entering or exiting school buses. School buses are equipped with cameras, and drivers may be issued a citation for failing to stop even when a police officer is not present.

Motorists are also reminded to obey all posted school-zone speed limits whenever they are active or otherwise clearly marked. Speeding violations in designated school zones may result in doubled fines, as provided by Colorado law.

Slow down, remain attentive, and follow all posted traffic signs, signals, and school-zone restrictions. Reports have already been made about careless drivers passing school buses with their stop signs engaged. The safety of our students is a shared responsibility, and every driver has a role in keeping our community safe.

PSA: Bear Safety in Manitou

Today, officers from the Manitou Springs Police Department and crews from the Manitou Springs Fire Department responded to a local residence to attempt to remove a bear that had become trapped inside a vehicle.

Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident. The vehicle, however, sustained significant damage as the bear attempted to free itself. Bears are strong and unpredictable, especially when food is involved or when they feel trapped and threatened. We are extremely fortunate and more than grateful that everyone involved, including residents and first responders, walked away from today’s encounter safely.

Today's incident is an important reminder that bears are incredibly intelligent and possess an extraordinary sense of smell, estimated to be more than 2,100 times stronger than a human's. Even small amounts of food, food wrappers, beverages, pet food, coolers, or other scented items left inside a vehicle can attract a bear.

While we can't control a bear's behavior, it is still important to take all measures possible to reduce the chances of attracting them to your home or vehicle. Here are a few simple steps you can take:

• Remove all food, drinks, trash, coolers, pet food, and scented items from your vehicle.
• Fully secure your vehicle by locking all doors and completely closing all windows.
• Never intentionally feed wildlife or leave attractants where bears can access them.

When bears begin to associate neighborhoods and vehicles with food, it creates dangerous situations for both people and wildlife. Taking a few extra moments to secure your vehicle can help prevent costly damage, reduce human-bear conflicts, and keep bears behaving like bears.
