MPU line crews participated in a crucial training exercise today led by the Municipal Electric Utilities of Wisconsin. On an annual basis, crews walk through pole top rescues, which is a simulation of rescuing a partner at the top of a pole who may be having a medical emergency or needing help getting down. While this is rare, it’s critical to have training and practice if the need arises. We’re grateful to our training partners, and our crews, for setting a culture where safety is the top priority.

Beginning November 1st, Wisconsin state law prohibits utilities from disconnecting essential services to residential customers during the moratorium period, however utilities are not required to restore service for those disconnected prior to the moratorium without appropriate arrangements in place. MPU urges past due customers to make payments, apply for energy assistance, or make arrangements for any arrearages. MPU is one of approximately 2,000 utilities across the country. According to the American Public Power Association, 2024 data shows that customers of utilities experienced an average of 1.5 fewer hours without power than customers of other utility types, outside of major adverse weather events, and nearly 6 fewer hours without power during major events. We see this reflected in our community. In 2025, MPU’s average customer outage time was 35 minutes/year compared to an average of 169 minutes/year for all U.S. electric utilities when there are no major event days. MPU is with local crews able to respond quickly when needs arise. We are grateful to our line crews for their dedication to serving our community well.

Why is our local power plant a crucial asset to the power grid? It provides renewable baseload generation that is dispatchable, which means the amount of generation can be increased or decreased as needed. Having dispatchable generation enables intermittent supply sources, like solar and wind, to be utilized when the conditions are right without sacrificing a stable grid.

We present to you…the MPU Academy Class of 2026! 🎓 The Academy was created with a focus on succession planning and employee development. This is the second group to have completed the program, and they graduated earlier this week. This 8-session program is a combination of leadership lessons taught by a leadership coach and organization-specific sessions taught by MPU leaders and subject matter experts. It’s an application-based program offered on an annual basis for a limited number of employees. We know that when leaders grow, the organization grows, and we’re so proud of the dedication and effort this group put into the Academy. Congratulations, graduates! 👏
