SSJID At SSJID - the South San Joaquin Irrigation District.- we provide water for irrigation & drinking and generate clean electric power.

In 1909, the South San Joaquin Irrigation District was established to provide a reliable and economical source of irrigation water for the areas around Escalon, Manteca and Ripon. SSJID's historic water rights allow for several hydroelectric power plants on a series of dams and reservoirs on the Stanislaus River. SSJID and Oakdale Irrigation District completed the original Melones Reservoir in 1926, and have co-owned the Tri-Dam Project, consisting of Donnells, Beardsley and Tulloch reservoirs and powerhouses since 1957. In 2005, as unprecedented urban growth replaced agricultural land, the District expanded into providing domestic water service to South San Joaquin County cities with its state-of-the-art water treatment plant. In 2009, SSJID completed a 1.4 megawatt solar farm that provides nearly all of the electricity to run its water treatment plant, and the District passes on a 15% savings on power costs to the cities who participate in the treatment plant. For several years, the District has been moving towards providing retail electric service as well, aiming to cut electric bills of those in its service territory by 15% across the board.

A century of shared history!

In 1926, SSJID and Oakdale Irrigation District completed Melones Reservoir, creating critical water storage to support the region’s growing agricultural industry.

The project was an important step in shaping the water system that generations of local farmers would come to depend on. While the original reservoir has since been replaced by New Melones Reservoir, its completion marked a major milestone in the longstanding partnership between SSJID and OID.

This year, we celebrate 100 years since that achievement and the lasting role it played in our region’s water history.

Today, SSJID joins water agencies and organizations across the country in recognizing Imagine a Day Without Water.

This national day of action encourages us to consider how much we rely on water. It’s something local students have captured in SSJID’s Vehicle Wrap Art Contest for many years.

Centered around the theme “Watering the Roots of Our Community,” the contest gives young artists a chance to show the role water plays in the places they call home.

Their artwork reflects an understanding of how important water is to our everyday lives and the future of our communities.

Agriculture has shaped SSJID’s service area for more than a century, and generations of local farmers have played an important role in the region we know today.

👩🏼‍🌾 On Farmers Day, we celebrate the growers who put in the work season after season, adapting to changing conditions while continuing to produce the crops that sustain our region and beyond.

SSJID is honored to serve our agricultural customers and support the water deliveries they depend on throughout the irrigation season.

For SSJID, clean energy is about more than how power is generated. It is also about managing energy wisely, optimizing operations, and strengthening resilience for the future.

That approach can be seen throughout SSJID’s history, from more than 60 years of hydropower generation through the Tri-Dam Project to solar production at the Robert O. Schulz Solar Farm. Today, Powered by Purpose carries that work forward with an effort to bring dependable, locally controlled power to the region.

Happy Source Water Protection Week! đź’§

The water we use every day begins with the health of our rivers, lakes, and groundwater. Keeping these sources free from pollution is one of the most effective ways to preserve water quality for the people and places that depend on it.

At SSJID, careful management of existing supplies helps protect their value for the long term. With changing conditions and evolving demands, taking care of the resources available today is an important part of preparing for tomorrow.
