A mandatory evacuation for all visitors on Hatteras Island takes effect at 8 p.m. tonight (Friday, October 16). A state of emergency has also been issued for Hatteras Island.

The order applies to visitors in Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village. Residents of Hatteras Island and areas north of Oregon Inlet are not under an evacuation order.

An updated forecast indicates an increased threat from a developing coastal nor’easter. Prolonged coastal flooding and repeated ocean overwash are expected to threaten N.C. Highway 12, potentially cutting off roadway access to and from Hatteras Island for an extended period.

Visitors should leave before conditions deteriorate and roadway access is compromised. Conditions are expected to worsen Saturday and into Sunday morning, with the potential for ocean overwash around high tide.

Visitors with upcoming reservations should contact their accommodations provider to adjust their plans. Do not travel to Hatteras Island while the evacuation order is in effect.

For updates and preparedness information, visit DareNC.gov/Storm. For road conditions, visit DriveNC.gov and follow NCDOT N.C. 12 on Facebook.

The ocean holds incredible potential as a source of clean, reliable energy, and right here on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, researchers are helping turn that potential into real-world technology. Through the Coastal Studies Institute and the Jeanette’s Pier Marine Energy Test Center, developers can test innovative marine energy technologies in both controlled laboratory environments and real ocean conditions, gathering critical data and learning how their systems respond to waves, currents, weather and corrosion. Together, these resources are creating a pathway to move promising ideas from the laboratory to the ocean and closer to real-world deployment.

N.C. Highway 12 will reopen to northbound traffic leaving Hatteras Island at 3 p.m. today (Tuesday, Sept. 29). A temporary one-lane gravel roadway will initially carry traffic in one direction only.

Southbound traffic will not be permitted until further notice. When southbound access resumes, current State of Emergency restrictions will remain in place, meaning only Priority One and Priority Two individuals will be permitted to enter Hatteras Island. There is no timeline for when visitor access will be restored.

Heavy congestion is expected when the temporary roadway opens. Drivers should be patient, pay attention and use caution.

Emergency ferry service between Rodanthe and Stumpy Point will continue 24 hours a day until congestion subsides and officials determine the route is no longer needed.

Visitors with upcoming Hatteras Island reservations should not travel toward the island at this time. Contact your accommodations provider directly with questions about your reservation.
