Try Rock Climbing with the Iowa Climbers Coalition!

As part of Jackson County Conservation's Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program, the ICC's experienced guides lead by Kierra DeVolder, who has guided climbers across the USA, will be leading an introduction to rock climbing designed for beginners and anyone curious about the sport who has never tried it before. Our guides will cover the basics of climbing and equipment, movement and technique, and provide resources to help you continue climbing beyond the event. All climbing equipment will be provided. Whether you’ve never touched a bluff or indoor climbing wall or you’re simply looking to try something new, come get on the rock with us at Prairie Creek Recreation Area!

Learn more about the Iowa Climbers Coalition and our work across the state at the link in the comments. Register for the event at the link in the ticket spot!

The annual migration of the monarch butterfly is a unique and amazing phenomenon. Traveling up to 3,000 miles to their wintering grounds in the Transvolcanic mountains of central Mexico, the monarch butterfly makes this journey every fall. To learn more about their migration, Monarch Watch began tagging monarch butterflies in 1992.

We invite the public to help tag monarchs every Sunday in September at the Hurstville Center. Presentation begins at 2:00 with a tagging demonstration. Following, visitors can borrow a net to catch and tag monarchs all afternoon. This event is for adults and kids. No cost.

Stop out this weekend to pick up some monarch caterpillars to take home to experience their amazing life cycle! All ages can enjoy caring for the caterpillars and watching their transformation.

We are open Noon-5:00 Saturday and Sunday. We have small containers to transport them home. At home, you will need a rearing container and access to milkweed to feed the caterpillars.
