This morning, members of the Marcellus Fire Department paid tribute to the lives lost during the attacks on September 11, 2001 and hung the American flag in the Village center. Our members sat in silence under the American flag from 08:46, the time when the north tower was hit, until 10:28, the time when the north tower collapsed.

We are grateful for the members of the community who gathered to pay tribute with us.
We remember and honor the thousands of innocent lives lost and never forget the events that took place 25 years ago. 🇺🇸

🇺🇸25th Anniversary of 9/11/01🇺🇸

Today, and every day, we remember the selfless actions of the many heroes and the lives lost during 9/11. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost, including 343 firefighters and 71 law enforcement officers, and many more continue facing health impacts from the events of 9/11.

“Always remember the heroes who did ordinary things, but at an extraordinary time so that others may live.”

-Retired FDNY Chief Joseph Pfeifer, first fire chief on scene of 9/11.

Marcellus firefighters extract two patients after an accident involving an off-road vehicle.

Yesterday at 20:34, Marcellus Fire was dispatched to Slate Hill Road for a traumatic injury in the middle of a field. Squad 2 with UTV (Capt. Mathieson), Rescue 1 (Asst. Chief Mayers), Car 1 (Chief Rothery) and Car 3 (Asst. Chief McNally) responded with 13 members, along with Marcellus Ambulance.

On scene, C-1 and C-3 determined the injuries to be the result of an accident involving a side-by-side and two patients were involved. Crews treated both patients and transported them 300 yards back through a wooded area and corn field utilizing the UTV to an awaiting ambulance.

🕯️Past Chief Thomas Lanning🕯️

It is with heavy hearts that the Marcellus Fire Department remembers past Chief Thomas Lanning. Tom passed away on Friday, August 21, 2026 and was a member of both the Marcellus and Navarino Fire Departments.

Tom Lanning was an active member of the Marcellus Fire Department for 15 years between May 1996 to February 2012 and rose to the rank of Fire Chief in 2009. He began his career in 1984 as a junior firefighter in the Navarino Fire Department. Tom had a love for the fire service and was a valuable asset for both Marcellus and Navarino. Tom’s family had a history in the fire service, following in the footsteps of his father “Sparky.” His brother, Mike, and two sons, Dylan and Kyle, both served as firefighters as well.

Tom enjoyed the outdoors as much as he did the fire service, spending most of his free time with family camping and hunting. Anyone who knew Tom, would say he had a contagious smile and positive attitude and helped shape the Marcellus and Navarino communities.

Thank you for your 42 years of service, we will take it from here. Rest in Peace Past Chief Tom Lanning.

Yesterday evening for our weekly drill, the Marcellus Fire Department had 20 members participate in hydrant and water operations with Ladder 33.

Firefighters deployed multiple crosslays, master streams and used the aerial to flow water. Members in the driver training program also practiced operating the aerial and the pump panel while flowing water to multiple lines, one of the many steps towards becoming certified apparatus operators with the MFD.
