Today was a day that will forever hold a special place in the history of the Maynard Fire Department.
This afternoon, we officially dedicated our new 100-foot Sutphen Tower Ladder, Tower 1, in memory of the late Commissioner and Firefighter Thomas P. Phelps.
Tom was much more than a member of this department. He was a devoted firefighter, a respected leader, a husband, a father, a friend, and someone whose dedication to Maynard left an impact that continues to be felt today. He gave so much of himself to the fire service and to the community he loved.
Tom was also the driving force behind the purchase of this very truck. He believed in what Tower 1 would mean for the future of our department and for the safety of the community we serve. Sadly, he never had the opportunity to see it arrive. On August 1, 2022, Tom passed away from a line-of-duty related illness.
Tower 1 also carries another meaningful legacy. Flying from its ladder is an American flag donated by the Morosco family in memory of the late Yorkville Fire Chief Nicholas Morosco, who was incredibly excited for Maynard when he learned we would be getting a tower ladder. Although Nick never had the chance to see Tower 1, his memory will now fly with it. With Tom’s legacy carried by the truck and Nick’s flag flying above it, Tower 1 represents far more than an apparatus. It carries the memory, sacrifice, and brotherhood of two remarkable men who gave so much to the fire service.
Today, surrounded by his family, friends, fellow firefighters, and the department that meant so much to him, we had the privilege of honoring the man who helped make Tower 1 possible. As part of the dedication, Tom’s wife, Michelle, was presented with a plaque recognizing his service, sacrifice, and the legacy he left behind.
There are some people whose presence remains long after they are gone. Tom is one of those people. His name, his service, and the example he set will forever be a part of Maynard Fire Department.
Now, every time Tower 1 pulls out of the station, a piece of Tom goes with it. The truck he worked so hard to bring to Maynard will continue serving and protecting this community for years to come, carrying with it the memory of the man who believed in it from the very beginning.
To everyone who joined us today, thank you for helping us honor a remarkable firefighter, leader, husband, father, and friend.
Commissioner Thomas P. Phelps may no longer be standing beside us, but his legacy will forever ride with us. ❤️🚒
