C Co, 1-106th AHB partnered with the USAF 23rd STS for a week of joint air training at Hurlburt Field, FL.

This training focused on critical mission sets including HELOCAST, T-DUCK, Caving Ladder, FRIES, and Rappel operations—enhancing interoperability and strengthening combat readiness across services.

For our ground forces, this event supported annual qualifications and skill upgrades, while aircrews maintained essential qualifications and currency.

Train together. Fight together. Win together.

This past Friday, April 3rd, we celebrated AASF 1 facility commander Jason Shelton’s promotion to Lieutenant Colonel. LTC Shelton came to 1-171 in 2017. He was assigned as the BN Personnel Staff Officer from 2018-2019. In 2020, he took command of Headquarters and Headquarters Company which included a rotation in Kosovo. His other positions include BN Assistant Operations Officer and BN Executive Officer. Today, LTC Shelton balances two roles as the full-time facility commander for AASF 1 and as 78th ATC’s safety officer.

1-171st is incredibly proud of LTC Shelton’s accomplishments and looks forward to seeing the impacts he will make as he continues his career in Army Aviation.

The Army’s Leadership Reaction Course (LRC) is a hands-on training event designed to build and evaluate small-unit leadership under pressure. At its core, it puts Soldiers in realistic, problem-solving scenarios where one person is designated as the leader and must guide a team through a specific challenge using limited time, equipment, and instructions.

1-171 Soldiers of all ranks leveraged the LRC during annual training to work on their team building and leadership skills. 💪🇺🇸

Water away! Water away! Water away! Alpha Company, 1-171st trained to new heights during Annual Training with Bambi bucket operations.

The Bambi bucket is used in aerial firefighting. Additionally, Bambi bucket operations play a key role in disaster response and remote water resupply, allowing crews to move thousands of gallons exactly where it’s needed most.

From pick up to drop off, every movement requires coordination between aircrew and ground personnel, reinforcing readiness for real world missions where timing and accuracy matter.

These crews aren’t just training. They’re preparing to support communities when it counts.
