On this Memorial Day, we honor the life of Corporal Robert Louis Dawson. The youngest child of James and Ida Dawson. Robert or "Bobby" was a graduate of Marietta High School, Class of 1938. After enlisting in January 1942, he became a part of the 101st Airborne Division, specifically the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, nicknamed the "Five-Oh-Deuce" or "Strike".
Cpl. Dawson was killed just five days after the initial D-Day jumps, during the period when the 502nd PIR was locked in a fierce, bloody battle to capture and secure the strategic French town of Carentan. His death on June 11, 1944, was just 15 days before his 23rd birthday.
His remains were repatriated to the United States, after initially being buried in a temporary cemetery in France, and interred in his family's cemetery, Dawson Cemetery, located on Shallowford Road.

The Marietta History Center invites the public to attend a lecture and book signing featuring local author Neely Young and his new book, “In Their Footsteps: Georgia’s Heroes of the Revolutionary War” on Tuesday, July 14 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the Center’s Community Room.
This program is part of the Marietta History Center’s ongoing celebration of America’s 250th anniversary (America250), connecting local and national stories through history, art, and civic dialogue.
Young, a native of Cedartown, Georgia, spent his career as a journalist covering the state and was a curator at the Georgia Historical Society. As an avid student of history, he often wrote about historical figures in his columns for Georgia Trend magazine. “In Their Footsteps” features key Revolutionary War heroes—from Major General Nathanael Greene to Nancy Hart, a spy and patriot—who impacted Georgia’s role in America’s fight for independence.
This is Young’s third book. In 2021, he wrote “Georgia Made,” which profiled the most influential Georgians in the 20th Century and for which he was nominated for Georgia Author of the Year. His second book, “Notorious Georgia,” profiled evil men, women, and institutions of the state, and the people who brought them justice.
Doors open at 4:00 pm, with lecture, book signing, and reception to follow. Books will be available for purchase.

The Marietta History Center invites the public to explore the history of the American Presidency through the remarkable personal collection of local historian and collector Russell Clayton on Saturday, June 27th, at 2:00 p.m. in the Museum’s Community Room.
This program is part of the Marietta History Center’s ongoing celebration of America’s 250th anniversary (America250), connecting local and national stories through history, art, and civic dialogue. As part of this celebration, the Marietta History Center is proud to offer this program free to the community.
Clayton, a sixth-generation Marietta native and retired Cobb County educator, will share items from his extensive collections related to the American Presidency and the White House. Featured materials include presidential autographs, rare books, vintage engravings, Christmas and holiday cards, gifts, and campaign buttons spanning multiple eras of U.S. history.
Clayton’s lifelong fascination with the presidency began at the age of eight, when his father took him to Washington, D.C. That early experience sparked a passion that has grown into decades of collecting and research. His presentation offers a personal and engaging look at the individuals, traditions, and symbols that have shaped the nation’s highest office.
Guests are encouraged to arrive early, as Clayton will be available prior to the official program to showcase additional items from his collection and speak informally with attendees.
