There is a saying that “every vote matters”, but I am going to alter it slightly – “every volunteer action matters.”
Out of almost 10,000 votes cast, we won the Democratic primary for school board by 78 votes in one of the closest elections in the state. And we did that because of the actions of over 100 volunteers who stepped up beginning in October of last year through to the eve of the election night.
We won thanks to the volunteers who wrote over 7,000 postcards, especially to voters who had never heard of our campaign. You set the tone for our conversations at the door during our canvassing efforts. We had so many people step up, including students at four Cobb high schools who spent their digital day of learning to write postcards and lend their voice to who they want to represent them in November.
We won thanks to the many who have knocked doors for me this election and for my prior runs for the state house. Those face-to-face interactions were critical in winning the election day vote in areas we hit most. Thank you to Sharon who has been with me now through three elections. When a driveway seemed too long or a house seemed challenging, she was there to give me that extra push to knock the door and make that connection with a voter.
In many elections, the margins are so great that it is hard to comprehend our impact on a result. But in elections like ours, the difference can be that extra few hours spent writing a stack of postcards or a three-hour door knocking shift on a Saturday. Or it can be that $50 donation that allows us to buy enough literature to get those 78 votes you need to win an election.
Your vote matters. Your time matters. You gave your all to me in this primary election. And I promise to repay that by giving you MY all as we look to flip this seat in November and give our teachers and students the representation that they deserve.
