⏰🍂 Time to Fall Back!

Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 1! Remember to turn your clocks back one hour before bed Saturday night.

A time change can feel like a big adjustment for little ones. Help your child ease into the change with a few simple steps:

🌙 Gradually shift bedtime and wake-up time by 10–15 minutes over several days.
📚 Keep familiar bedtime routines, such as brushing teeth, reading a book, and sharing a goodnight hug.
☀️ Enjoy morning daylight and active play during the day.
🎒 Prepare clothes and bags the night before to make mornings easier.

A little preparation can help everyone start the day rested and ready to learn! 💙

🐱 Little Helpers, Caring Hearts! 🐾

For National Cat Day, we’re celebrating what children can learn by helping care for pets!

Filling a water bowl with a grown-up, brushing gently with help, or noticing when a cat needs space can give preschoolers opportunities to practice:
💛 Kindness and empathy: Thinking about what another living thing needs.
🐾 Responsibility: Helping with a small, regular task.
🗣️ Language: Talking about what pets eat, how they move, and what their behavior might mean.
🔢 Early math: Counting scoops or comparing the sizes of bowls and toys.
🌟 Confidence: Feeling proud of being a helpful part of the family.

Try asking your child: “What does a cat need to feel safe and cared for?” You might be surprised by their thoughtful answers!

No pet at home? Pretend play with a stuffed animal is a wonderful way to practice caring, too. Set up a cozy bed, make a pretend food bowl, or open a stuffed-animal veterinary clinic!

Grown-ups should supervise interactions, handle litter box cleanup, and help children wash their hands after caring for pets. Let cats choose whether they want attention or space.

📸 Share a picture of your cat—or your child’s cat drawing—in the comments! We’d love to meet your furry friends.

🎃 It's National Pumpkin Day!

Turn a pumpkin into a learning activity!
A pumpkin and a little curiosity can lead to lots of learning! Invite your child to explore its color, shape, and texture. Ask questions like:
🍂 Is it smooth or bumpy?
🍂 Does it feel heavy or light?
🍂 How many lines can you count?
🍂 How is it different from another pumpkin?

For babies and toddlers, explore a whole pumpkin together with adult supervision. Describe what they’re touching: “This pumpkin feels bumpy!” or “The stem is hard.”

For preschoolers, encourage them to make predictions: “What do you think we’ll find inside?” They can also compare pumpkins by size, draw a picture of one, or look for something else that is orange!

These simple activities help children practice new words, counting, observation, and problem-solving. You don’t have to carve it to have fun learning together! 🧡

At WMCAP Head Start and Early Head Start, everyday discoveries help children learn and grow. We offer preschool and early childhood services for eligible children and families in Washington and Morgan counties, at no cost to families.

Every day brings another chance to learn, connect, and grow! 🌟

Our September attendance was 90.75%! Thank you to our families and staff for working together to help children attend regularly. Let’s keep up the good work! 💙

Each day at Head Start brings opportunities to build friendships, explore new ideas, and practice new skills. Consistent attendance helps children feel comfortable with classroom routines and stay connected to their teachers and friends.

As we wrap up the week, here are a few ways to make next week’s mornings easier:
⭐ Keep a consistent bedtime.
⭐ Set out clothes and gather supplies the night before.
⭐ Allow a little extra time to get ready.
⭐ Talk with your child about what they look forward to at school.

We know some mornings—and some weeks—are harder than others. If transportation, family circumstances, or another concern is making attendance difficult, please reach out to your child’s teacher, Family Education Advocate, or Home Visitor. We want to work together to support your family!

When your child is sick, please follow program illness guidelines and let us know they’ll be absent.

Thank you for making attendance a priority. Let’s keep learning, connecting, and growing together! 🌟
