Last night was a special night. Our art therapist/in house counselor, Marissa, unveiled the Threads of Survivorship murals. This project started in June and finished in September and collaborated survivors of relationship abuse in the counties we serve. The four murals were labeled Loss, Anger, Growth and Hope. The art is beyond words to describe. It is a must see.

The murals will be available to view for a period of time at the Bayshore Art Center on the UW-Marinette campus in Marinette. We would like to thank the Bayshore Art Center for their graciousness of allowing us to host the event and for the opportunity to display these beautiful murals.

We also want to thank the survivors who put so much into creating these moving pieces. We hope it creates awareness that moving forward can be freeing and inspiring.

We know not all abusers of domestic violence will have a criminal record. Some have never had police contact. However, it someone has a conviction with a domestic abuse related crime, we urge caution when with that person.

Can people change? Absolutely! But it requires an abuser to realized they have a problem and seek intensive therapy on their own. A few sessions will not "cure" someone.

We also know, abusers will try and explain their charges or convictions to a new partner often blaming the victim, saying they "lied" to police. "They made it up" or they "blew it out of proportion." They just took the conviction as they were told too by their lawyer. Often others are to blame for why they were convicted. It wasn't their fault.

Keep in mind, a victim cannot press charges or drop charges in Wisconsin. Police refer charges to the State District Attorney's Office. Based on evidence received, the District Attorney will issue charges if there is enough evidence to support the charges.
