At the southernmost tip of Illinois, where the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers meet, sits a community with a history unlike anywhere else in our state.

This week on Southern Illinois Treasures, we're visiting Cairo, Illinois!

Once a thriving transportation and commercial hub, Cairo played an important role in our nation's history, particularly during the Civil War and the development of commerce along America's great rivers.

While Cairo has experienced its share of challenges over the years, its historic landmarks, remarkable architecture, and the stories of generations who called it home remain an important part of Southern Illinois.

Join me as we explore Cairo's past, take a look at what makes this river community so unique, and celebrate another piece of Southern Illinois history worth remembering.

The Illinois Department of Human Services announced it will preserve 25 of the facility's 75 inpatient psychiatric beds.

While Senate Republicans say the decision to maintain some mental health services at Choate is a positive development, they remain concerned that the significant reduction in beds will leave Southern Illinois families with limited access to critical mental health care.

Lawmakers are continuing to urge IDHS and the Pritzker Administration to work with local communities, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to preserve access to mental health treatment and ensure Southern Illinois families can receive the care they need close to home.

With deer hunting season underway in Illinois, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters about the importance of testing harvested deer for Chronic Wasting Disease.

CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects deer, elk, and other members of the deer family. The disease has no known cure and can spread between infected animals, often going undetected for extended periods before symptoms appear.

Hunters interested in participating can request a free testing kit here: https://huntillinois.org/cwd-sampling/

Illinois cannot solve an energy shortage by shutting down reliable power plants. Families and businesses need electricity they can depend on, especially during extreme weather and periods of high demand.

I'm supporting legislation to keep dependable generation online, cut unnecessary permitting delays, and make it easier to bring additional power onto the grid.

Affordable energy starts with reliable energy.
