In 1923, a Marion man was president of 11 foundries in three states. Two are still pouring iron. Only one never left home.

Atlas Foundry Company Inc has operated on Marion's west side since 1893. It survived a five-year Depression closure, the loss of its largest customer and a fire at a sister plant that, as it turned out, paid for its first automated molding line. Today its castings anchor rows of seats at Wrigley Field and Busch Stadium.

We spent time in the archives and at the foundry with Jim Gartland and Bill Gartland to understand why this one stayed. The full story is linked in the comments.
