Now that we are getting into the drier months and harvest season, it is especially important to stay aware of the increased risk of field and equipment fires. Dry vegetation, wind, and hot machinery can allow a small fire to spread quickly.

- Check the weather forecast. If conditions are dry and windy, consider waiting.
- Make sure the property address is clearly visible from the road.
- Know the exact field location or field identification.
- Keep water, fire extinguishers, and fire blankets readily available.
- Have equipment available to create a fire break if needed.
- Keep machinery clean, well-maintained, and regularly checked for fire hazards.
- Use working smoke detectors in buildings, preferably with alerts connected to your phone.
- Have an emergency plan for livestock and know how you would move them if necessary.

A little preparation can make a major difference when every second counts. Stay alert and stay safe this harvest season.

Outdoor warning sirens are tested regularly to help ensure they are working properly and ready to alert the community during an actual emergency.

Our routine siren test is conducted on During the scheduled test, no action is needed.

Regular testing helps identify potential equipment issues before an emergency occurs and keeps our warning system ready when it matters most.

Severe weather, unexpected breakdowns, and hazardous road conditions can happen with little warning. Keeping a basic emergency kit in your vehicle can help you stay safe until help arrives.

Consider keeping these essentials in your car:

- Jumper cables
- Flares or reflective warning triangles
- Ice scraper
- Car phone charger or portable power bank
- Warm blanket
- Paper map
- Cat litter or sand for extra tire traction
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Gloves and warm clothing
- Bottled water and non-perishable snacks
- Basic first-aid kit

Take a few minutes to check your vehicle emergency kit and replace any expired, damaged, or missing supplies.

A little preparation now can make a big difference when you're stranded later.

Even after the immediate danger has passed, additional hazards may remain. Watch for washed-out roads, contaminated water or buildings, gas leaks, broken glass, damaged electrical wiring, and slippery surfaces.

Before entering your home:

- Check the outside for downed power lines, gas leaks, and structural damage.
- Do not enter if you smell gas, floodwater remains around the building, or officials have not declared the area safe.
- If you are unsure whether the structure is safe, have it inspected by a qualified building inspector or structural engineer.
- Be cautious around debris and watch for displaced animals, including snakes.
- Report hazards such as chemical spills, downed power lines, washed-out roads, smoldering materials, or dead animals to local authorities.
- Keep a battery-powered radio nearby and continue following updates from local officials.

Your safety comes firstโ€”when in doubt, stay out.

Power outages can happen unexpectedly and may last much longer than we anticipate. Take some time today to think about how an extended outage could affect your household.

A prolonged power outage can:

- Disrupt phone, internet, water, and transportation services
- Close grocery stores, gas stations, banks, ATMs, and other businesses
- Cause refrigerated or frozen food to spoil
- Affect access to safe drinking water
- Interrupt the use or charging of important medical devices

A few simple steps can help you prepare:

- Keep flashlights, batteries, and portable chargers available
- Have a supply of nonperishable food and drinking water
- Keep your vehicle fueled when severe weather is expected
- Know how you will power or safely manage essential medical equipment
- Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio available for emergency updates
- Never use generators, grills, or other fuel-burning equipment indoors or in enclosed spaces

Power outages are often more than just an inconvenience. Preparing ahead of time can help keep you and your household safe, informed, and comfortable until power is restored.

Emergencies can happen quickly, and having a plan in place can help you and your family respond with less confusion and more confidence.

During National Preparedness Month, take time to create or review your household emergency plan.

Important things to include:

- Emergency contacts: Know who to call and have important phone numbers written down.
- Meeting locations: Choose a safe place to meet if your household becomes separated.
- Evacuation routes: Know more than one way out of your home, neighborhood, or community.
- Shelter locations: Know where you would go during severe weather or another emergency.
- Communication plan: Decide how family members will check in if phone or internet service is limited.
- Medical needs: Plan for medications, medical equipment, and other health-related necessities.
- Pets โ€” Include food, carriers, leashes, medications, and a plan for where they can go with you.
- Emergency supplies: Know where your emergency kit is kept and make sure everyone can access it.
- Important documents: Keep copies of identification, insurance information, and other important records in a safe, accessible place.

A plan does not have to be complicated. The most important thing is that everyone in your household knows what to do, where to go, and how to stay in contact.

Make a plan today so youโ€™re ready when the unexpected happens.

Preparedness isnโ€™t only about protecting yourself. Itโ€™s about helping protect the people who depend on you.

During National Preparedness Month, take a few minutes to think about how your household would handle an emergency.

Make sure your loved ones know:

- Where to go during severe weather or an evacuation
- How to contact each other if phone service is limited
- Where emergency supplies are kept
- What medications, medical items, or important documents may need to go with you
- How pets, children, older adults, and anyone with additional needs will be cared for

Emergencies are stressful enough without having to figure everything out in the moment. A little planning ahead can help your family respond faster, stay calmer, and make safer decisions.

Prepare today so you can better protect the people who matter most tomorrow.
