The Southern Illinois Salvation Army and the Williamson County Veterans Assistance Commission will team up next week to recognize local veterans during National Donut Day in Marion.
The event is scheduled for Friday, June 5, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the main entrance of the Marion VA Health Care System on West Main Street. Organizers say around 250 free donuts will be handed out to veterans, VA patients, visitors and staff while supplies last.
National Donut Day was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the “Donut Lassies,” volunteers who served donuts and coffee to American troops during World War I.
“This event gives us an opportunity to express our gratitude to the men and women who have served our country,” said Darla Harms with The Salvation Army.
Officials say the event is meant to both thank veterans for their service and highlight the history behind the annual tradition.

🇺🇸🍩 Veterans, This Donut Is For You. 🍩🇺🇸
Did you know National Donut Day began because of American Soldiers?
In 1917, during World War I, brave Salvation Army volunteers known as the "Donut Lassies" traveled to the front lines in France. Their mission was simple: provide donuts, coffee, encouragement, and a reminder of home to American troops serving far from their families.
More than 100 years later, we are continuing that tradition.
On Friday, June 5, The Southern Illinois Salvation Army and the Williamson County Veterans Assistance Commission invite Veterans, VA patients, visitors, and their families to stop by the Marion VA Health Care System for a free donut and a heartfelt thank you for your service.
