Markle Residents: Please Read Before Signing
If you received one of these forms in your PO Box, I want to make sure everyone understands what they may be signing.
This is a USPS Petition for Change in Rural Delivery. While the idea of having mail delivered closer to home may sound great, it’s important to understand that this does not necessarily mean you can install a mailbox in front of your house and have mail delivered there.
For example, in an area like Lee Street, mail delivery could potentially be provided through a Community Delivery Unit (CDU). Essentially, this is a larger unit containing multiple individual mailboxes, similar to PO Boxes, that would be located somewhere along the street. Depending on the location, that could mean walking to a shared mailbox at the end of the block rather than going to the post office.
If you’re comfortable with that arrangement, that’s perfectly fine. My concern is simply that people should understand what they’re potentially agreeing to before signing the petition.
I’m not upset about the proposal, and I’m not trying to tell anyone how to vote. I just feel there should have been a clear explanation of what this change could mean, rather than simply being asked to sign a form and place it in the mail slot.
I also have questions about what happens afterward. From my understanding, changing to this type of delivery could make it difficult or impossible to return to PO Box service, and there may be questions about who would be responsible for maintaining the shared mailbox units long-term.
Before signing, please ask questions, understand the proposed arrangement, and make an informed decision. This could affect how you receive your mail for years to come.
